The Hunger Games Summary Chapter by Chapter

āš ļø Spoiler Warning: This section contains detailed, chapter-by-chapter plot summaries.

Part I: The Tributes

Chapter 1: The Reaping Day

Katniss Everdeen awakens on the day of the reaping in District 12. After hunting illegally in the woods with her friend Gale, they discuss their resentment toward the Capitol’s oppressive rule.

At the ceremony, Effie Trinket draws the name of the female tribute: Primrose Everdeen, Katniss’s twelve-year-old sister.

Chapter 2: ā€œI Volunteer!ā€

Without hesitation, Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place, an act met with a silent, three-finger salute from the crowd.

The male tribute chosen is Peeta Mellark, the baker’s son. Katniss is flooded with a memory of Peeta intentionally burning bread to give to her starving family years ago, creating a complex debt.

Chapter 3: Goodbyes and Tokens

Katniss says emotional goodbyes to her family and Gale.

Her friend Madge gives her a gold mockingjay pin as a token. On the train to the Capitol, Katniss reflects on her father and the mockingjay symbol. Their mentor, the drunken victor Haymitch Abernathy, makes a disastrous first impression.

Chapter 4: A Bargain with Haymitch

Peeta cleans up Haymitch, earning Katniss’s wary suspicion.

The next day, they confront Haymitch and strike a deal: they will follow his instructions if he stays sober enough to coach them. Arriving in the Capitol, Katniss is disgusted by the opulent, cheering crowds.

Chapter 5: The Girl on Fire

After her makeover, Katniss meets her kind stylist, Cinna. He designs spectacular, fiery costumes for the tribute parade.

Holding hands with Peeta as Cinna suggests, they make a stunning entrance that captivates the Capitol audience and marks them as memorable contenders.

Chapter 6: Faces from the Past

In the tribute tower, Katniss recognizes an Avox (a silenced servant) as a girl she saw captured in the woods. Peeta covers for her lapse.

Later, on the roof, Katniss tells Peeta the story, grappling with her guilt over her inaction during the capture.

Chapter 7: Training and Defiance

During training, Haymitch advises them to hide their skills. Katniss notices Rue, a small tribute who reminds her of Prim.

Furious when the Gamemakers ignore her, Katniss shoots an arrow at their banquet table, impaling an apple in a pig’s mouth to demand their attention.

Chapter 8: The Highest Score

Expecting punishment, Katniss is surprised when her defiance earns her the highest training score of 11.

This makes her a target but also marks her as a formidable player. Tensions rise as Peeta requests separate coaching for the upcoming interviews.

Chapter 9: Peeta’s Confession

Nervous about her interview, Katniss is calmed by Cinna and succeeds by being authentic.

Then, during his televised interview, Peeta stuns the nation by confessing he has a long-standing crush on Katniss, crafting a ā€œstar-crossed loversā€ narrative for the Capitol.

Part II: The Games

Chapter 10: Into the Arena

Haymitch explains Peeta’s confession makes them desirable and helps secure sponsors. Before launch, Peeta tells Katniss he wants to ā€œdie as himself.ā€

Cinna attaches the mockingjay pin to her jacket, and Katniss is propelled into the arena to start the 74th Hunger Games.

Chapter 11: The Bloodbath

Ignoring advice to run, Katniss barely escapes the initial bloodbath at the Cornucopia, grabbing only a backpack.

She survives a knife attack and flees. By day’s end, eleven tributes are dead. She learns Peeta has allied with the brutal Career tributes.

Chapter 12: Fire and Thirst

Katniss evades the Careers but suffers severe dehydration. After days of searching, she finds a pond just in time.

Her respite is short-lived as she wakes to see a wall of fire racing toward her—a Gamemaker trap to force tributes together.

Chapter 13: Treetop Escape

Katniss escapes the fire but receives a burn on her leg. Hunted by the Careers, she climbs a tree to safety.

Trapped, she sees the young tribute Rue in a nearby tree, silently pointing to a tracker jacker nest above Katniss’s head.

Chapter 14: Tracker Jacker Attack

Katniss devises a plan to cut the nest loose at dawn. She receives burn medicine from a sponsor.

Executing her plan, she drops the nest on the sleeping Careers, causing chaos and deaths. She retrieves a bow from a fallen tribute before Peeta screams for her to run.

Chapter 15: An Alliance with Rue

Recovering from tracker jacker venom, Katniss awakens with the bow, transforming her capabilities.

She finds Rue, and they form an alliance, sharing food and healing each other’s wounds. They plot to destroy the Career tributes’ food supply.

Chapter 16: Destroying the Supplies

Katniss and Rue split up: Rue creates diversions while Katniss infiltrates the Career camp.

Katniss observes the booby-trapped supplies and cleverly triggers the landmines from a distance by shooting a bag of apples, causing a massive explosion.

Chapter 17: Rue’s Signal

Injured from the blast, Katniss hides and watches Cato kill a fellow Career in rage. She makes her way back to the rendezvous point but finds Rue missing.

Hearing Rue’s mockingjay signal followed by a scream, Katniss races to find her friend trapped in a net.

Chapter 18: ā€œI Volunteer as Tribute!ā€

Katniss kills Rue’s attacker but is too late. As Rue dies, Katniss sings to her and covers her body in flowers as an act of defiance. In gratitude, District 11 sends Katniss a gift of bread.

A new rule is then announced: two tributes from the same district can win together. Katniss immediately calls out for Peeta.

Part III: The Victor

Chapter 19: Finding Peeta

Katniss finds Peeta badly wounded and camouflaged by a stream. She moves him to a cave and tends to his severe leg injury.

To secure sponsor gifts, she kisses him, playing into their televised romance. Haymitch sends a pot of broth in response.

Chapter 20: The Feast Announcement

Peeta’s condition worsens with infection. An announcement promises a ā€œfeastā€ at the Cornucopia with items each tribute desperately needs.

To go alone, Katniss drugs Peeta with sleep syrup provided by Haymitch and leaves for the feast.

Chapter 21: Thresh’s Mercy

At the Cornucopia, Katniss is attacked by the Career Clove, who taunts her about Rue. The powerful tribute Thresh intervenes, killing Clove after hearing her disrespect Rue.

Sparing Katniss’s life in return for her kindness to Rue, Thresh lets her take the medicine and escape.

Chapter 22: Recovery and Stories

Katniss returns and administers the medicine, saving Peeta’s life. As they recover during a storm, they share personal stories, deepening their bond.

Their genuine moment earns them a lavish sponsor feast, restoring their strength.

Chapter 23: Nightlock

The death of Thresh leaves four tributes. Katniss realizes the clever Foxface died after stealing and eating poisonous ā€œnightlockā€ berries Peeta had gathered.

With Cato remaining, they decide to keep the berries as a potential weapon as the Gamemakers dry up all water sources.

Chapter 24: The Muttations

Forced to the lake, Katniss and Peeta face Cato. He is not attacking but fleeing from a pack of monstrous wolf-like muttations.

The trio scrambles to the top of the Cornucopia. Horrifyingly, the mutts have the eyes of the dead tributes, including Rue.

Chapter 25: The Berries

Cato holds Peeta in a headlock. Katniss shoots Cato’s hand, and Peeta shoves him into the mutt pack. After a prolonged attack, Katniss mercy-kills Cato.

The Gamemakers then revoke the rule change, demanding a single victor. Katniss proposes a double suicide with the nightlock berries, forcing the Capitol to declare them both winners.

Chapter 26: Aftermath

Rescued by hovercraft, Peeta undergoes emergency surgery.

Katniss is healed and has her scars removed. Haymitch warns her that President Snow is furious; she must convincingly play the part of a girl driven mad by love to avoid reprisal.

Chapter 27: The Performance

In a final interview, Katniss and Peeta sell their tragic love story. On the train home, Katniss admits to Peeta that some of her affection was for the cameras.

Heartbroken, Peeta realizes his feelings were real. They return to District 12 holding hands for the cameras, their relationship fractured but their survival secured.
