The Will of the Many Summary Chapter by Chapter | James Islington
Introduction To The Will of the Many (Chapter-by-Chapter Summary)
What does it cost to survive inside a system built to consume you?
That question sat with me from the opening pages of James Islington’s The Will of the Many.
The novel drops us into a meticulously ordered republic where power is quantified, ceded, and enforced—and where one young man’s refusal to submit becomes dangerous knowledge.
The story follows Vis, a fugitive prince hiding in plain sight.
His world expands rapidly—from the hard edges of Letens to the political theater of Caten and the ruthless meritocracy of the Catenan Academy. The stakes aren’t just personal; they’re structural.
Every promotion, every test, every alliance tightens the system’s grip, even as cracks begin to show.

Part I: Imperium Sine Fine
Chapter I
Vis, an orphan working at a prison in Letens, escorts a high-ranking official using the alias “Sextus Hospius” to interrogate a prisoner.
When the prisoner attacks, Vis intervenes and accidentally touches a “Sapper”—a device that drains a person’s Will. He is unharmed, revealing he never underwent the mandatory ceding ritual.
Hospius, intrigued by this immunity, pays Vis for his silence, marking their first fateful encounter.
Chapter II
Vis frequents an illegal fighting pit called the Theatre. The promoter, Ellanher, announces a special bout for Vis against a higher-ranked “Sextus.”
Vis negotiates for higher pay, noting a mysterious girl in the crowd who has been watching him. The chapter establishes Vis’s hidden toughness and the gritty underworld he inhabits.
Chapter III
Vis fights the Sextus, initially holding back to win a side bet on the match’s duration. After being cut, he flies into a cold rage and brutally knocks his opponent unconscious.
He wins the fight but loses his bet, and Ellanher banishes him from the Theatre to avoid drawing the Hierarchy’s attention to Vis’s unnatural strength.
Chapter IV
Facing pressure from the orphanage matron, Vis plans to flee Letens. He learns a “Quintus” is coming to the orphanage for an adoption interview.
Hiding his illegal earnings, Vis is unnerved by the visit, sensing his precarious anonymity is about to shatter.
Chapter V
The visitor is revealed to be “Hospius,” now identified as Senator Magnus Quintus Ulciscor Telimus. Ulciscor tests Vis’s intellect and deduces he has never submitted his Will at an “Aurora Columnae.”
He offers to adopt Vis, but only if Vis cedes his Will for a minute—a test Vis refuses, confirming Ulciscor’s theory.
Chapter VI
Ulciscor officially adopts Vis, insulting a bully on his way out. He takes Vis to a “Transvect,” a massive hovering transport, revealing they are traveling to the elite Catenan Academy on the island of Solivagus.
Vis is awed by the technology but wary of the senator’s motives.
Chapter VII
During the journey, Ulciscor reveals his true goal: he wants Vis to spy on the Academy’s Principalis, Veridius Julii, whom he suspects in his brother Caeror’s death.
Their Transvect is sabotaged, crashing in a forest. Ulciscor is shot by an arrow and falls unconscious, leaving Vis alone.
Chapter VIII
Vis fights off attackers and is confronted by the mysterious girl from the Theatre, named Sedotia.
She reveals herself as part of the rebel “Anguis” and calls Vis by his true name, Prince Diago of Suus.
She claims the Anguis orchestrated his adoption and demands he join them, threatening to expose him if he refuses.
Chapter IX
Vis awakens in the Academy infirmary, meeting students Emissa and Indol. He is treated by a physician who is later revealed to be Principalis Veridius Julii himself. Ulciscor arrives, and a tense, polite reunion occurs between the old acquaintances.
Chapter X
Veridius encourages Vis to apply to the Academy. Ulciscor privately warns Vis it’s a “bad place” and points out two mysterious ruins on the island he must investigate, hinting they are connected to Caeror’s death.
Chapter XI
Vis travels to the capital, Caten, with Ulciscor and is hidden at the Telimus estate. He meets his stern new tutor, Lanistia, a blind Sextus who lost her eyes at the Academy.3

Chapter XII

Chapter XIII
Lanistia begins Vis’s brutal training, assessing his knowledge and physically testing him. She reveals her blindness but demonstrates superior skill using her Will, setting a high bar for his education.
Chapter XIV
Vis spars with a larger opponent and wins, but Lanistia criticizes his lack of discipline. She effortlessly defeats him in a controlled exercise, teaching him that skill and Will surpass brute force.
Chapter XV
Lanistia reveals a secret replica of the Academy’s “Labyrinth” training device. She teaches Vis to control its shifting walls using a bracer. Vis struggles, injuring himself, but begins to learn the precision required.
Chapter XVI
After weeks of intense training, Vis is approached in the baths by Senator Advenius, who asks Vis to train with his daughter, Aequa. Vis negotiates a trip to Caten for the upcoming festival.
Chapter XVII
Lanistia is furious about the deal but reveals Caeror’s death was officially ruled a suicide. Vis’s training intensifies, and he masters basic Labyrinth navigation.
Chapter XVIII

Chapter XIX
At the Arena, Vis slips away to meet Sedotia. She leads him to the rebel leader, Melior, who is revealed to be Estevan—his father’s former advisor. They pressure Vis to join the Anguis, but he refuses. Sedotia scars his chest as “protection.”
Chapter XX
The festival event begins, but Melior interrupts, disabling all Will in the Arena. He delivers a condemning speech and triggers catastrophic explosions in the packed stands, beginning a massacre.
Chapter XXI
Panic ensues. Vis gets Aequa to safety but returns to stop Melior. On the Arena floor, he confronts the rebel leader.
Chapter XXII
Melior reveals the massacre is a “necessary sacrifice” and forces Vis to kill him with the stone stylus.
The energy build-up stops, saving thousands. Vis is hailed as a hero named “Catenicus.”
Chapter XXIII
Recovering at the villa, Vis receives a coded letter from Caeror mentioning strange terms. He learns Lanistia was the student who survived Caeror’s incident, losing her memory and eyes.
