A year after separating from her husband Tom Valentine, Cherry lives a quiet life in Omaha. She works a corporate job at a railroad company. Her peace breaks when a trailer drops for the movie adaptation of “Thursday,” Tom’s famous webcomic.

The trailer shows a British actress wearing a fat suit to play “Baby,” a character modeled directly on Cherry. Cherry refuses to watch it. Her sisters’ group chats erupt with outrage.

Desperate to feel alive, Cherry goes to a concert alone. She runs into Russ Sutton, a handsome former college crush. Russ is now the mayor’s chief of staff. They go home together and begin dating.

Tom announces he is coming back to Omaha to clean out the garage and pack his belongings. He plans to move to Pasadena permanently. Cherry and Tom begin a painful process of sorting their shared life. They use polite Post-it notes to divide books, movies, and decorations.

Cherry’s relationship with Russ hits a wall. They see the “Thursday” trailer on a date. Russ becomes deeply uncomfortable with Cherry’s identity as the fat character “Baby.”

He admits that in college, he chose to date her friend Stacia instead because he feared mockery for liking a “chubby” girl.

Rainbow Rowell shows Cherry ending the relationship with Russ. His affection is shallow and too dependent on public perception.

On Christmas Eve, Tom finds Cherry overwhelmed by holiday baking. He helps her. They spend a nostalgic evening making gingerbread cookies and Jell-O.

Tom spends Christmas Day with Cherry’s family. That night, he gives her an antique Disney charm bracelet. They sleep together.

The reconciliation forces hard truths. Tom admits that after Cherry asked for a divorce, he slept with his publicist, Rachel, once.

He was lonely and depressed. He begs to come home, saying he only wants Cherry. She forgives him. She recognizes they are “terminally” married.

Tom moves back in. He decides to end “Thursday” for good.

The novel concludes at the movie premiere. A reporter asks Cherry what it is like to see herself on screen. Tom interrupts. He says “Baby” is a two-dimensional shadow. He calls his wife “infinite.” Cherry surprises him at his hotel. They are permanently reunited.
