The Only One Who Knows Summary: Lisa M. Matlin’s Dark Thriller
TL;DR: The Short Version
A live television broadcast ends with a microphone hurled at a co-host, and a woman walking off set.
That woman is Melanie Holmes to her viewers, but her real name is Minnow Greenwood, and the town she runs back to is the one she spent two decades escaping.
The Only One Who Knows by Lisa M. Matlin follows Minnow into Kangaroo Bay, an insular fishing community on the Victorian coast where violent men set the rules and the sea keeps what it takes.
Shark attacks, old disappearances, and a family history Minnow has never told anyone sit at the center of the story.
- Protagonist: A traumatized former TV host who has spent years hiding who she is.
- Antagonist: A sadistic boat skipper who films deaths at sea and sells shark parts on the black market.
- Core engine: Childhood memory, cold-case murder, and a threat that follows Minnow home.
- Tone: Visceral, claustrophobic, and steeped in salt water and blood.
- Ending: Minnow confronts the man who killed her mother’s memory and finally controls her own account of the past.

The Only One Who Knows Summary
SPOILERS AHEAD. This section recounts the plot, including the ending.
Then: Kangaroo Bay, 1998–2000
Minnow and Heath Greenwood grow up terrified of their father, Peter, a charter fisherman who carries a custom black-bladed knife. Their mother, Danielle, leaves the house after beatings and stays with her friend Colleen Holloway.
On August 8, 1998, Danielle disappears for good. Minnow spends her childhood running wild in the Wicked Woods with Travis Holloway.
After Minnow tries to drown a classmate named Amy Anderson in a creek, Trav stabs Amy with a fillet knife to prove his loyalty. Amy survives and her family leaves town.
In July 1998, a tourist named Hannah Striker dies in what is reported as a shark attack. Soon after, an abalone courier named Donny Granger arrives in Kangaroo Bay.
Ten-year-old Minnow watches her father walk Donny into the woods at knifepoint and cut his throat near a blackwood tree. Peter spots a figure in the shadows and assumes his wife saw the killing.
That assumption leads Peter to murder Danielle in August 1998. In February 2000, pub owner Terry Hargrave confronts Peter and shoves him through a screen door.
A week later, Minnow sabotages her father before a night fishing trip. She slashes slits in his waders and holds his black knife blade in the forge fire until it snaps off.
Peter steps into the ocean, the waders fill with freezing water, and he drowns. Months later, Minnow fuses the black blade to a handle carved from a kangaroo femur, becoming the only one who knows what happened to him.
Now: Melbourne and the Return
At thirty-four, Minnow lives in Melbourne as Melanie Holmes, a junior co-host on the morning show Morning, Sunshine! She is engaged to a controlling meteorologist named Oliver and works beside a bullying veteran host, Joy Marriot.
During a live broadcast about a shark attack in Kangaroo Bay, Minnow hurls her microphone pack at Joy and walks off. She breaks into Oliver’s house to rescue her golden retriever, Jessie, and drives back to her hometown.
She moves into her childhood house and reconnects with Heath, who now runs their late father’s charter boat, the Deep Sea. On her first night aboard, they hear screams near the pier.
Luke Newton, skipper of the rival boat Reel Easy, is found laughing on deck while a seventeen-foot great white tears apart a floating body. The victim is later identified as tourist Rachel Sutherland.
An investigative reporter named Chris Cooper arrives from The Daily to cover the attacks and the town’s cold cases. Minnow trades information with him: she offers to lead him to Donny Granger’s body in exchange for freelance work and help exposing Joy’s charity fraud.
At the blackwood tree, Minnow digs and finds a shallow grave. It does not hold Donny.
Instead she uncovers a skull with blunt-force trauma and a Christian fish pendant inscribed “Little Minnow, I love you! Love, Mum.” She has found where her mother was buried.
Chris publishes the discovery, and Kangaroo Bay becomes a national story. He and Minnow travel to Bendigo to interview Kat Striker, Hannah Striker’s mother.
Kat reveals that someone left a pair of great white shark jaws on her doorstep weeks before Hannah died. Kat also identifies Donny Granger from a photograph as one of Hannah’s diving companions.

The Syndicate and the Video
Minnow visits Deb Sutherland in Bethanga, the mother of Rachel Sutherland. Deb says Rachel was free-diving for illegal greenlip abalone to pay off divorce debts.
Deb shows Minnow a twenty-seven-second video sent to Rachel’s phone from a burner. It shows Hannah Striker being killed by a great white while someone off-camera films, with a warning: “This is what happens to rule breakers.”
On the drive back, Minnow cannot reach Chris. His white Audi is found abandoned at a rest stop near Violet Town, and he is gone.
At home, Minnow finds two large great white shark teeth on her doormat. The message is clear.
She keeps digging and learns that Terry Hargrave, Luke Newton, Trav, and Heath are tied to an illegal syndicate. The group runs a hidden abalone processing facility on Neptune Road.
They chum the bay with blood and decapitated kangaroo carcasses to draw great whites, then hunt the sharks for their jaws, fins, and teeth. Re-watching the video with the volume up, Minnow hears a laugh after the attack and recognizes Luke’s signature chuckle.
The Climax at Sea
That night, Luke breaks into Minnow’s house, ties Jessie in the garage, and knocks Minnow unconscious. She wakes on the Reel Easy to find Chris beaten and trapped in the storage hold.
Luke explains everything. Hannah and Donny were couriers smuggling poached abalone to a Melbourne dive shop, and both began skimming money.
Luke threw Hannah into chummed water and filmed her death, while Peter Greenwood killed Donny in the woods. When Rachel poached in their territory, Luke sent her the video and chummed the water while she dove.
Luke also confirms that Peter murdered Danielle because he believed she witnessed Donny’s killing, when the real witness was ten-year-old Minnow. Then Luke chums the sea with bloody meat and shoves Chris overboard into a pack of great whites.
Minnow reaches the kangaroo-bone knife strapped to her calf and stabs Luke in the shoulder and chest. The sharks ram the hull, throwing both of them into the water.
Minnow fights off a shark, climbs back aboard, and finds Luke slumped in the skipper’s chair, bleeding from a severed coronary artery. She stands over him with her father’s knife and watches him die.
Before he goes, Luke recognizes the blade: “I… know… that… blade.”

The Aftermath
Minnow steers the boat to shore and rescues Jessie. She tells Heath everything and helps him leave town to start over with his girlfriend Tara and their son, Jonah.
At the police station, Minnow gives a full statement exposing Terry Hargrave, Luke Newton, the poaching syndicate, and the truth about her mother and Donny Granger. She deliberately leaves out Heath’s full involvement, shields Trav, and conceals her own role in her father’s drowning and Luke’s death.
Terry Hargrave is arrested and sentenced to prison. Minnow writes an investigative exposé for Trident Magazine titled “Kangaroo Bay: A Lawless Frontier,” dedicated to Chris Cooper.
Donny Granger’s body is recovered from the Wicked Woods, giving his family closure. Minnow settles back into Kangaroo Bay with Jessie, wearing her mother’s pendant and carrying her father’s black-bladed knife.
