The Ice Angels Summary: A Chilling Dual-Nation Hunt

A Doll, a Cathedral, and a Decade of Silence

Twelve-year-old Sophie Miller walks barefoot into the frost of Lincoln Cathedral, twenty days after she disappeared.

In her arms she carries a hand-painted Finnish Martta doll from the 1960s.

That single object pulls Detective Inspector Elea Baker from Finland to England in Caroline Mitchell’s crime thriller The Ice Angels.

Elea has her own reasons for making the trip. Her daughter Liisa vanished on a walk home from school in 2016, one of three blonde twelve-year-old girls taken in Finland over two decades.

Mitchell’s novel follows two police forces, two countries, and one mother who has never accepted that her daughter is gone.

The book is the first entry in the Detective Elea Baker series, blending police procedure with a cold-case hunt that stretches across the Baltic.

TL;DR: The Short Briefing

Sophie Miller’s escape from captivity puts a rare Finnish doll in police hands, and the clue points back to a series of unsolved abductions in both Finland and Lincoln.

Finnish DI Elea Baker joins Operation Turnstile, working alongside her ex-husband DCI Richard Swann and newly promoted DI Mitch Harding.

  • The core mystery: who has been taking twelve-year-old blonde girls across two countries, and why were white feathers mailed to their families?
  • The personal stake: Elea’s own daughter Liisa is one of the missing, and Elea has never treated the case as closed.
  • The trail: a house near cathedral bells, a chest freezer, a Finnish cabin in the woods, and a grave that holds the wrong body.
  • Key themes: maternal persistence, the cycle of abuse, psychological conditioning, and the tension between protocol and instinct.

The Ice Angels Summary (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: this section covers the full plot, including the ending.

The case begins with a history nobody has connected. In Finland, three twelve-year-old blonde girls vanish across two decades: Anu Korhonen in 2006, Venla in 2008, and Liisa Baker in 2016 on her walk home from school in Porvoo.

Each family later receives a single white feather in a black envelope.

Lincoln has its own pattern. Twelve-year-old Jenny Flynn is found dead and semi-buried in snow on West Common in January 2021. Two years later, Chelsea Hobbs disappears in January 2023, leaving her school bag on an ice patch, and her family also receives a white feather.

The present-day story opens when Sophie Miller is found alive at Lincoln Cathedral after twenty days missing. She is clutching a rare hand-painted Finnish Martta doll from the 1960s, and the object suggests a cross-border link.

DCI Richard Swann invites his estranged ex-wife, Finnish Detective Inspector Elea Baker, to consult on Operation Turnstile. In the property room, Elea examines the doll and finds delicate eyelashes drawn on its face in permanent marker.

It is the exact heirloom she gave her daughter Liisa before the abduction. Elea commits fully to the investigation and frequently clashes with official protocol.

She confronts Chelsea Hobbs’s abusive stepfather, Phil Hobbs, breaking his fingers and forcing a confession. He admits he sold Chelsea’s routine to local drug dealers Ant and Sienna Thompson to clear gambling and drug debts.

Elea is partnered with newly promoted DI Mitch Harding. Neither realizes at first that they had a one-night stand in her hotel before she knew his identity.

Sophie eventually speaks during a careful interview. She describes a man with a facial scar hidden behind a beard, smelling of liquorice, wearing Velcro-strap shoes, and speaking with a Finnish accent like Elea’s.

Sophie also says she was held in a house near cathedral bells, where another captive could be heard crying. The description leads the team to a rental property on Carline Road.

In the basement, police find a chest freezer holding the frozen body of Chelsea Hobbs, dressed in a white communion-style dress. The search confirms the Lincoln cases and the Finnish cases share a single offender.

Elea then receives a frantic call from Maria Korhonen, mother of the first missing Finnish child. Maria claims her son Anu has come home after twenty years and hints that he knows something about Liisa.

Elea flies to Finland alone and tracks Anu to an isolated cabin in the Porvoo woods. There, the backstory emerges: Anu was himself abducted as a twelve-year-old boy in 2006 by a terminally ill woman named Johanna.

Johanna manipulated and abused him until he took over her obsession with capturing blonde “angels” to build a permanent family unit. When Anu raises a rifle over an outdoor grave, Elea fires in self-defence and kills him.

Exhuming the grave reveals the remains of Johanna, not Liisa. Swann, who followed Elea to Finland, then shows her fresh CCTV footage from Lincoln.

The footage shows a young blonde woman matching Elea’s features checking into a hotel in the city. Elea and Mitch return to Lincoln and locate the woman on West Common among the horses.

It is Liisa Baker, now twenty-two and alive. Anu, also known as Mikael, had brought her to Lincoln and fed her lies that her mother had remarried and abandoned her.

Liisa also reveals a hidden truth: during her captivity she gave birth to a daughter named Bekka, fathered by Anu. Anu had placed the child with an elderly couple in Langworth as collateral to keep Liisa compliant.

Five-year-old Bekka is recovered and reunited with Liisa and her grandmother Elea.

Elea posts her signed divorce papers to Swann, sends a promised Cuban cigar to her Helsinki colleague Niall, and settles into supporting her daughter and granddaughter.
