Who Will Enjoy Eragon?
This book suits readers who enjoy traditional epic fantasy with a clear hero’s journey. The pacing is moderate. World-building is detailed.
Action sequences are frequent but spaced between travel and training scenes.
Fans of Anne McCaffrey’s dragon books or Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea will find familiar ground. Those who like long series with deep lore will appreciate the groundwork laid here.
It also works for younger readers ready for a full-length fantasy novel.

Eragon Summary: The Full Story
Warning: Spoilers Ahead.
The land of Alagaësia lives under the rule of King Galbatorix. He was once a Dragon Rider. After his first dragon died, he turned against the order.
He formed the Thirteen Forsworn and slaughtered the Riders. Now his empire stretches across the continent.
Eragon is an orphan raised by his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran on a farm near Carvahall. While hunting in the Spine, he sees a magical explosion.
It leaves behind a blue stone. He tries to sell it to the butcher Sloan. Sloan refuses it because the stone came from the Spine.
One night, the stone cracks. A blue dragon hatches. When Eragon touches her, a silver mark burns into his palm. This mark is the gedwëy ignasia. It forges a mental link between him and the dragon he names Saphira.
Two cloaked figures arrive in Carvahall. They are the Ra’zac, servants of Galbatorix, searching for the stone. Saphira forces Eragon to fly with her into the mountains. When they return, the farm is destroyed. Garrow is dying from burns.
Garrow dies at Horst’s house.
Eragon, driven by revenge, wants to chase the Ra’zac. The village storyteller, Brom, reveals he knows Eragon’s secret. He gives him a red Rider’s sword named Zar’roc.
Together, they leave to hunt the Ra’zac.

Brom trains Eragon in swordsmanship, reading, and magic. In the ruined town of Yazuac, Urgals ambush them. Eragon uses magic for the first time, killing two of them.
They travel to Teirm, where they meet Brom’s friend Jeod. Angela the herbalist and her werecat Solembum read Eragon’s future.
They learn the Ra’zac hide near Dras-Leona. In that city, the Ra’zac attack. They capture Eragon. A stranger named Murtagh rescues them. But Brom is stabbed while protecting Eragon.
Brom dies in a cave. Before death, he tells Eragon he was a Rider.
His dragon was also named Saphira. Eragon builds a tomb, and Saphira turns it to diamond. Murtagh then agrees to travel with Eragon to the Varden, the rebel group opposing Galbatorix.
Near Gil’ead, Urgals capture Eragon. He is taken to a fortress and interrogated by the Shade Durza. Murtagh and Saphira break in. They free Eragon and also rescue a poisoned elf woman named Arya. She knows the way to the Varden.
They cross the Hadarac Desert, with Murtagh revealing he is the son of Morzan, first of the Forsworn. At the mountains, they dive through a waterfall.
Dwarves lead them to Farthen Dûr, a city inside a mountain. The Varden leader Ajihad welcomes Eragon. The dwarf king Hrothgar watches him with suspicion. Murtagh is imprisoned for refusing a mind probe.
An army of Urgals attacks inside the mountain. Eragon and Saphira fight. Durza arrives. Saphira and Arya break the star sapphire on the ceiling to distract him.
Eragon stabs Durza through the heart with Zar’roc. The Shade dies. The Urgal army collapses.
Eragon wakes with a scar across his back. In his sleep, a voice called the Mourning Sage healed his mind. The voice asks him to come to the elven forest of Ellesméra.
Eragon knows his fight against the Empire has only begun.
