The Butler Summary: The Deep Dive

Spoilers ahead.

The Butler: A Thriller opens in La Californie, the hills above Cannes, where freelance butler Baxter arrives at Villa Sérénité. He finds the Australian caretakers Blake and Elise Lawson throwing a wild party and fires them.

Clare Mackintosh introduces Anya Kovács, who blackmails Baxter into spying on Alec Prescott’s finances.

Baxter brings in housekeeper Miriam and chef Thierry. In town he catches a young pickpocket named Red, later known as Esme Rinaldi.

The guests arrive: Alec Prescott, his girlfriend Kaitlyn, his ex-wife Sylvie, son Carter, Carter’s girlfriend Jade, and godparents Damian and Francesca Huxley.

Tensions surface immediately. Alec belittles Carter’s AI startup and sexually harasses Miriam. Damian makes predatory advances toward Jade.

That night, a hissing sound and sleeping gas knock everyone out, and a sliding door is forced. Police treat it as a failed burglary.

Kaitlyn announces a pregnancy, but Miriam finds her contraceptive pills. Sylvie reveals the divorce is not final. A second gas event occurs, and the next morning Alec is found dead in the pool.

The gendarmes call it an accident. Baxter checks the alarm logs and sees the system was deactivated from inside.

Baxter teams up with Red, Miriam, and Thierry.

They uncover blackmail against Jade over her past as a stripper, a draft will favoring Kaitlyn, and the fact that Alec was bankrupt. Someone greases the spiral staircase and removes handrail screws, causing Baxter to fall.

Baxter and Red examine the sound system. The hissing gas was actually a digital audio track played from Francesca Huxley’s phone.

In a confrontation, Baxter explains that Francesca drugged Alec, drowned him in the pool, staged the break-ins, and attacked the stairs.

Red takes her keys, and Francesca is arrested.

The group dissolves: Carter and Jade reconcile, Sylvie rejects Damian, Kaitlyn leaves, and Thierry and Miriam become engaged. Baxter lies to protect Red from an arrest warrant and hires her as Florence Maybery.

They leave for his next job in Santorini.
