Burn of the Everflame Summary: Penn Cole’s Epic Finale

Burn of the Everflame: A Queen, a Prison Island, and a Reawakened God

There is an island in Emarion that no one has ever escaped.

Diem Bellator wakes there, wounded by a godstone blade and kept alive by a heartbeat that is not her own. Across the sea, Prince Luther Corbois marches on Lumnos with a rebel army behind him.

Burn of the Everflame is the fourth book in Penn Cole’s The Kindred’s Curse Saga.

It follows both threads at once: a continent splitting over who has the right to rule, and an ancient power that was locked away for a reason.

TL;DR: The Short Version

What it is: the closing volume of an epic romantic fantasy saga, told across 85 chapters and two main points of view.

  • The setup: Diem survives a fatal wound and is trapped on CoeurĆ®le, the prison island where nine god-like beings sealed their tenth brother.
  • The revelation: The Kindred reveal Emarion’s true history and crown Diem queen, while warning that the only weapon that can kill Ophiucae demands a life in return.
  • The war: Diem unites mortals, half-mortals, and Descended against Ophiucae’s mind-control campaign, at great personal cost.
  • The core themes: mercy over vengeance, chosen family over bloodline, and the price of leadership.
  • Ending: Resolved. This is a finale, not a cliffhanger.

Burn of the Everflame Summary: The Full Story

Spoilers ahead. The ending is included below.

Surviving CoeurƮle

The book opens after Diem Bellator is stabbed through the heart with a godstone blade by the Ignios King. She survives because a one-sided mating bond ties her heartbeat to Prince Luther Corbois, who feels her pain from across the continent.

Trapped on CoeurĆ®le, the open-air prison where the Kindred sealed their tenth brother, Diem mourns her friend Perthe and survives on acrid waterweed. Meanwhile, Luther and Diem’s mother Auralie lead Guardians and rebels toward Lumnos to demand mortal representation before the gathered Descended monarchs.

The Kindred’s Confession

At an ancient temple on the island, the spirits of the nine Kindred appear to Diem through the God’s Horn. They reveal that they carried a fragment of their home world’s heartstone to Emarion and used it to cast the Forging spell.

They admit their youngest brother, Ophiucae, was corrupt, and that containing him fractured the land. The only weapon capable of ending him, they explain, is Sorrow’s Edge, a godstone sword holding a heartstone fragment.

Heartstone magic requires strict balance, and the price is a life for a life. Recognizing Diem’s compassion, the nine Kindred place all nine Crowns upon her and name her Queen of Emarion.

Queen of Emarion

Diem uses the heartstone to shatter the barrier sealing CoeurƮle, summons her gryvern Sorae, and flies to Lumnos. She arrives as Ophiucae attacks the palace, where Luther, High General Alixe, and the Descended rulers are under siege.

Wearing a nine-peaked circlet, Diem confronts her sire. He strips the ten-pointed brand from her throat and withdraws.

She takes control as queen but refuses autocratic rule, offering every soldier an equal pension and a choice. She establishes a governing council in Lumnos that gives mortals, half-mortals, and Descended a shared voice.

During a heated council meeting, Luther publicly reveals that he is half-mortal, born to Remis Corbois and a mortal woman named Florille who was murdered to hide the truth. The Twenty Houses are outraged, but the revelation hardens Luther’s commitment to Diem’s vision.

Diem then learns that killing Ophiucae with Sorrow’s Edge will cost her own life. To spare Luther the grief of a stranded mate, she asks for space and distances herself, hiding her planned sacrifice.

Alliances, Betrayals, and Losses

Diem travels Emarion to build an army. In Ignios, where Ophiucae poisoned the water supply and destroyed the crops, she uses Meros water magic and Arboros plant magic to restore the oasis.

The act convinces the Ignios refugees and High General Nidara to join her. In Fortos, she confronts a rebel force led by Vance and finds Guardians like Runa and Enness who want unity rather than slaughter.

Diem also chooses to break the forced Forging bonds on every gryvern across the continent, granting them free will. Sorae and Tybold remain with her and Luther by choice rather than compulsion.

A deeper betrayal follows. Diem learns that her childhood friend and ex-fiancƩ, Henri Albanon, was coerced by Vance into striking the final blow that murdered her father, Andrei Bellator.

Her brother Teller urges her to execute him. Diem spares Henri instead, for the sake of his unborn child with Lana.

Teller’s Sacrifice

Ophiucae escalates the war by using Umbros mind-control magic to erase the memories and wills of entire populations, marching innocent people as puppets. Teller deploys an invention combining flameroot and godstone paste that neutralizes both the magic-blocking effect and the mind control.

In a desperate move to save Diem, Teller tricks Ophiucae and stabs him with flameroot paste. Teller is killed in the act.

The Final Battle on CoeurƮle

Grieving, Diem and Luther fly to CoeurƮle for the last confrontation, surrounded by mind-controlled Merosian troops. Diem taps into her innate magic, the Undying Fire of the Old Gods, and unleashes silver flames that cleanse the island and shatter the heartstone on the temple dais.

She stabs Ophiucae with Sorrow’s Edge and declares that Andrei Bellator is her true father. To satisfy the life-for-life price, she prepares to give her own life; Luther drives the blade through her chest as well so they can pass together.

The Ending

Diem wakes in the afterlife at the Everflame tree, reunited with the Kindred and with Andrei, Teller, and Perthe. Her family finds peace, but she feels incomplete without Luther.

The ancient Red-Haired God of the Everflame offers her a third choice to restore balance to Emarion. Diem chooses love over rest and returns to the living world, reawakening in Lumnos crowned with silver Fire as Luther addresses the council.

One year later, Emarion is governed by a unified council where mortals and Descended share power equally. Diem and Luther are fully mated and married, living in a handcrafted cottage in the Lumnos forest.

Lily is pregnant with Teller’s child, Taran and Zalaric are mated, and the gryverns Sorae and Tybold live freely alongside them.

Who Should Read Burn of the Everflame?

This book suits readers who have already completed the first three volumes of The Kindred’s Curse Saga, since it resolves threads established from Spark of the Everflame onward.

It fits readers of romantic fantasy who want a fated-mates romance set inside a large-scale war for political power. The alternating points of view and short chapters keep the pace quick despite the 880-page length.

Readers who prefer standalone novels, self-contained plots, or minimal romantic focus will find the book depends heavily on prior series context. Those interested in rebellion arcs, magical caste systems, and a heroine negotiating leadership will find those elements central here.
