Zaira works as an apprentice baker in the Meriva Empire. Her peaceful routine ends when a magical necklace left by her mother burns against her chest.

The pendant is linked to her older sister, Analla. Intense heat means grave danger.

Zaira slips into the Shadow Nest, a keep controlled by the corrupt Grim sorcerer Seferin. She finds Analla locked in a dungeon, weak and dying. Analla admits she tried to steal a liphanet crystal to sell for coin.

As punishment, Seferin cursed her to suffer a slow, agonizing death within thirty days.

Zaira promises to return with a cure. She learns from a sorcerer that a legendary prosperity stone from the Temple of Elphar can break any curse. The temple sits in The Shallows, a deadly and isolated region.

Knowing she cannot survive the journey alone, she goes to the Tilted Crystal Tavern to find a protector.

There she meets Thane Valkor, a masked warrior with gold magic and three swords. He first refuses to help. When she mentions Seferin, he changes his mind. Thane agrees to guide her to the temple for double his usual payment in gold coins.

To raise the money, Zaira sells her mother’s magical pearl necklace. They begin their trek and pass through the Scraps, where Zaira’s compassion causes a skrellin attack. A skrellin is a flesh-eating monster that can disguise itself as a human child. Thane kills it and warns her to keep her kindness to herself.

In Redclaw, they buy a black horse named Pearl. A kopa-addicted gambler named Garyn attacks them.

Thane reveals terrifying combat skills. Zaira discovers he is a shadow assassin, an outlawed Nightcarver who uses black magic alongside swordsmanship. She stays with him because he is her only hope to save Analla.

They cross into Ruvain territory with Algar, Thane’s childhood friend and a charming thief.

Algar travels with Zephra, a pink maobi, and can teleport. A young boy named Dulan helps them, but he is shot and dies during a pursuit. Zaira is grazed by a poisoned arrow. The group finds refuge at the Kamtaur Inn, owned by twin hybrid minotaurs named Rynthea and Torjack.

Grim soldiers attack the inn. A pale sorcerer named Maliek nearly kills them. Rynthea joins the quest after her inn is ruined. Thane tells Zaira he seeks the Tome of Azidel from the temple to defeat Seferin.

In Delchester Forest, illusions torment the group. A swamp monster attacks and Rynthea nearly dies. Zaira performs CPR and saves her. They travel to Bernwood, a wealthy mountain kingdom.

Prince Kelrean flirts with Zaira. Thane shows intense jealousy. After a festival, Thane admits the prosperity stones might not exist and that retrieving the Tome requires the blood of a willing, noble mortal.

Zaira feels betrayed but still grows closer to Thane. They kiss and share intimate moments.

The group travels to Frevella, a blind sorceress, who gives them a Kelvanite Sphere to navigate The Shallows. In exchange, they must confess their deepest secrets. Thane speaks about his guilt over his brother Koa’s death.

Maliek and Shadow Guild assassins ambush them. Thane and Rynthea are swept into rapids. They are rescued by an elementalist tribe. Thane explains how Seferin framed him and Koa for stealing the Sunderstone, which led to Koa’s murder.

In Gadonia, Zaira and Thane share a room and have sex. Thane returns Zaira’s mother’s necklace, which he took back from the pawn shop. They survive a water dragon attack. Finally, they reach The Shallows and enter the Temple of Elphar.

Inside, Maliek ambushes them and reveals the prosperity stones are a lie. They were used up centuries ago. Zaira is devastated by Thane’s betrayal but still frees the Tome with her blood.

She stabs Maliek through the heart. They escape to the ship, but Zaira secretly plans to trade her life for Analla’s.

Thane sneaks onto the ship. They agree on a plan: Zaira will drink a muting elixir so Seferin’s magic will fail if he touches her. In Meriva, Zaira confronts Seferin. He brings Analla up.

Zaira grabs the liphanet crystal and absorbs the curse to save her sister. When Seferin touches her, his magic is muted. She slashes his face. Thane fights the guards, and they escape to the ship.

Zaira and Thane embrace and confess their love.

But in the epilogue, Zaira discovers her mother’s necklace is missing. Seferin snapped it off during the struggle. She hears his voice chanting a soul-binding spell.

She collapses in Thane’s arms.

The final realization hits her: she is the one who is cursed now.
