TL;DR

Kell is an Antari, one of two remaining magicians who can cross between parallel Londons.

He moonlights as a smuggler and unknowingly transports a piece of living magic from the sealed, corrupted Black London.

A Grey London thief named Lila Bard steals the relic, pulling both into a chase across worlds.

The stone’s power attracts the cruel rulers of White London, who aim to use it to conquer all remaining cities.

Kell and Lila must stop them, and in the process, Kell binds his own life to his brother’s to save him, a desperate act that scars them both forever.

The relic is finally banished to Black London, and Lila chooses to stay in a world of magic to pursue a pirate’s life.

SPOILERS AHEAD. The following recounts the full plot of A Darker Shade of Magic, including the ending.

Kell serves the royal family of Red London, a place where magic flows like a river. He carries official messages between Grey, Red, and White London.

On the side, he breaks the law, delivering forbidden trinkets for collectors in magicless Grey London. His routine shatters during a visit to White London.

A strange woman presses a parcel into his hand. Inside is a black stone, a relic of pure magic from the sealed Black London, the world that devoured itself centuries ago.

Kell returns to Red London and is immediately attacked by assassins wielding enchanted blades. He escapes, bleeding and unable to use his full power, and stumbles into Grey London.

There, he collides with Delilah “Lila” Bard, a thief who dresses as a man and dreams of becoming a pirate. Lila robs him, taking the stone.

Kell tracks her to a tavern called the Stone’s Throw. Their standoff is cut short when Holland, the Antari of White London, arrives to reclaim the stone for the sadistic Dane twins, Athos and Astrid. Holland nearly kills Kell, but Lila intervenes.

She then forces Kell to take her back to his world, hungry for a life beyond the grey docks.

They arrive in Red London to find the palace in chaos. The Dane twins have launched a coup using possession magic.

Astrid takes control of Prince Rhy, Kell’s foster brother. In a cruel twist, she makes Rhy stab himself in front of Kell. To prevent Rhy’s death, Kell uses the black stone to perform a forbidden soul seal, tethering Rhy’s life to his own.

Kell and Lila then travel to White London for a final battle. In the White Castle, Lila fights the possessed Astrid while Kell faces Athos.

Athos is killed by his own magical silver serpent. Kell finds Astrid, who has taken Lila’s form. He stabs her, turns her body to white stone with the relic’s power, and shatters her.

The stone’s sentient presence, Vitari, tries to consume Kell’s mind. He forces it back.

To dispose of the artifact, Kell sends it into the dying Holland’s body and pushes him through a doorway into Black London, sealing the threat away.

Back in Red London, Kell and Lila are pardoned.

Rhy recovers, forever bound to his brother.

Lila sets her sights on a dark ship to begin her pirate life, while Kell remains at Rhy’s side, both carrying matching scars and a shared heartbeat.
