He can channel saidin, the male half of the One Power. In this world, male channelers go mad and die horribly.

The Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche, arrives with a delegation of Aes Sedai. Rand panics and tries to flee, but the gates are barred.

That night, Darkfriends inside the fortress cut the throats of guards at the Dog Gate. They let in Trollocs and a Myrddraal.

The attackers free the captive Padan Fain and steal the Horn of Valere along with the ruby-hilted dagger from Shadar Logoth.

Before escaping, they write a blood message on the guardroom walls. Mat Cauthon, linked to the stolen dagger, begins to waste away.

Lord Ingtar Shinowa leads a hunt to recover the stolen items. Rand, Mat, and Perrin join him, accompanied by Loial the Ogier and Hurin the “sniffer.”

Hurin can smell past violence and tracks the trail south. They find the flayed bodies of Shienaran soldiers hanged from a tree.

Soon after, Rand, Loial, and Hurin fall asleep near a mysterious monument. They wake in a faded, empty alternate world.

They have passed through a Portal Stone into a mirror dimension. There they meet Selene, a beautiful noblewoman who urges Rand toward glory.

When grolm attack, Rand channels saidin and activates a Portal Stone to return them near Kinslayer’s Dagger in Cairhien.

Robert Jordan splits the narrative here. In the real world, Perrin uses his wolfbrother abilities to track Fain with the help of wolves.

Verin Mathwin, an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah, joins Ingtar’s party. Rand’s group reaches Cairhien and is swept into the Game of Houses.

Rand reunites with Thom Merrilin, who lives with his apprentice Dena. Fain’s Darkfriends then steal the Horn and dagger from their inn.

Hurin tracks the stolen items to the manor of Lord Barthanes Damodred. At a grand party, they learn Fain has taken the Horn through a Waygate to Toman Head.

The Waygate is guarded by Machin Shin, the Black Wind. Barthanes is later found torn to pieces in his room.

Meanwhile, King Galldrian’s assassins murder Dena. A vengeful Thom kills the assassins and eventually assassinates the King, plunging Cairhien into civil war.

Verin leads the hunters to a Portal Stone near Stedding Tsofu. Rand channels to activate it, but a surge forces everyone through hundreds of alternate lives.

They wake on Toman Head, horrified to discover they have lost four months in the blink of an eye.

During those lost months, a parallel plot unfolds. Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, and Min are betrayed by Liandrin, a secret Black Ajah sister.

Liandrin leads them to Toman Head, where the Seanchan capture Egwene and collar her with an a’dam as a damane.

Nynaeve and Elayne escape and plot a rescue. They secure passage on Bayle Domon’s ship, the Spray, and capture a sul’dam named Seta.

Concurrently, Rand’s party infiltrates the Seanchan compound. Mat retrieves the Horn and dagger. Rand duels and kills High Lord Turak, a blademaster.

Ingtar confesses he was the Darkfriend who let the Shadow into Fal Dara. He repents and sacrifices his life to hold off the Seanchan.

Trapped between Seanchan and Whitecloak armies, Mat blows the Horn of Valere. A thick fog rises, and dead heroes led by Artur Hawkwing materialize.

Rand is pulled into a metaphysical duel in the sky against Ba’alzamon. He remembers Lan’s lesson of “Sheathing the Sword.”

Rand allows Ba’alzamon to stab him in the side, enabling a mortal strike to Ba’alzamon’s heart. The Seanchan are routed.

Rand wakes five days later, cared for by Min and Moiraine. The heron has branded itself into his second palm, confirming his identity as the Dragon Reborn.
