Strange Familiars Summary
Spoiler warning: this section describes the plot, including the ending.
Gwendolynne Chan is in her final year at Seamere College of Magical Veterinary Sciences, training in the Magical Familiars stream. She attends on a scholarship, which means she cannot buy magic the way legacy students do.
Instead she performs rationing spells at night, cutting her own skin and burning her qì to afford enough power for hospital shifts and exams.
At Saint Gertrude’s Hospital for Magical Familiars, Gwen examines Percy, a fourteen-year-old one-eyed cat with severe magiphilia. His owner, Mrs. Mason-Price, wants him put down because his sparking magic damages her furniture.

Gwen fakes the cat’s death, burns the consent form, and smuggles him to her dorm in her cardigan.
That night a Magecorp charity gala at Hintze Hall explodes, and familiars across the Seamere campus go feral at the same moment. Percy speaks into Gwen’s mind and begins absorbing the excess magic from the panicked animals around him.
The absorption accidentally forms an illegal familiar bond between Gwen and the cat.
Harrisford Briggs, the top student in the Mythological Creatures stream, catches Gwen hiding Percy. He recognizes the cat as Nathaniel Price’s former pet, but he does not report her.
Instead he blackmails her into secretly treating Pudding, his bearded dragon familiar, who was badly burned in the museum blast.
Gwen and Harrisford compare official incident dates with reports on the conspiracy site Witches Truths Society. The surges line up with the travel schedule of Harrisford’s father, Magecorp CFO Darghan Briggs.
They fly the college dragon Arkany to the Briggs estate and break into Darghan’s locked study.
Inside they find historical texts about ancient surges and a drawer of staff IDs belonging to Magecorp employees who are missing or dead. Gwen disguises herself with the ID of missing employee Hani Nguyen and reaches the restricted vault at Magecorp headquarters.

With Percy channeling magic across a long distance, Gwen shatters the vault door.
Inside is the Source, a glowing honeycomb-patterned meteorite pulled from a dimension known as the Void. Darghan Briggs finds her there and explains that Magecorp owns no magic mines.
The company tears holes in the universe and lets power flow through. When Darghan draws a gun, Gwen grounds the live-wired vault door and triggers an explosion that leaves him in a coma.
Harrisford carries her out on dragonback.
The surges keep growing. Conall Peters’s guinea pig Gary dies of magiphilia. During a midnight stable emergency, Gwen and Harrisford deliver a qÃlÃn foal while the mother is caught in a surge.
They save both animals, and the rivalry between them starts to lose its edge.
Conall decodes stolen Magecorp blueprints and learns that Void portals must be held open by tethers. Gwen and her best friend Heloise Chapman discover that Seamere’s Dean, Professor Anika Kaur, is secretly an acting leader of the Magical Liberation Organization.
Acting on a lead from Kaur, Gwen and Heloise break into the sixteenth floor of London General Magical Hospital. Through observation glass they watch Magecorp surgeons implant glowing fragments of the Source into the necks of living patients.
Back at Seamere, Gwen’s telepathic bond with Percy goes silent. Vice Dean Thomas Pickering tells her the cat was sent to the pound and suspends her from the college.
Gwen returns to her family’s flat in Manchester. Harrisford drives north with her practice exam papers and turns up at her door.
In her bedroom he sees the rationing scars on her thighs, and she learns he has performed his own version of the same sacrifice in silence.
He also tells her about his mother, Theodora Finlay-Briggs, who vanished when he was four. Before leaving, he anonymously pays for an official familiar permit so Gwen can reclaim Percy and return to Seamere in time for exams.
After finals, Harrisford’s friend Danny Wong reveals himself as an MLO caster. In Harrisford’s room, Danny opens a Void portal with a stolen Magecorp black box and drops two revelations.
Harrisford is Patient 39, implanted with a large Source fragment as a young child by his own father. And Pudding the bearded dragon is Theodora, the supreme leader of the MLO, who transformed herself into a familiar twenty-one years earlier to stay near her son.
Danny drags Harrisford into the Void to remove the implant before Magecorp can use him. Gwen, Heloise, Conall, and Percy follow with a black box and Percy’s magic.
Inside the collapsing cavern, Harrisford realizes his implant is what has been triggering the surges wherever he goes. When the portal begins to implode, he shoves Gwen back through the opening and stays behind.
At graduation, Pickering announces that Dr. Gwendolynne Chan has taken the top student title by a single point. Gwen turns down the Ministry position she spent seven years competing for.
She takes a job at Magecorp instead, adopts Pudding alongside Percy, and makes a quiet promise. She will dismantle the company from the inside, learn to extract Source implants safely, and reopen the Void.
Her last thought in the book is directed at Harrisford: wait for me.
