The Cheating Husband Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section reveals the entire plot, including the ending.
Emma is a young woman rebuilding her life in downtown Windsor. She falls for Owen Pearson after seeing his bus stop advertisement: āYour dream life starts with me.ā
Owen claims he lives with a terrible roommate, hiding the fact that he is married to Karen and has a four-year-old daughter, Chloe.
Karen grows suspicious when she smells perfume on Owen and follows him to a coffee shop. She sees him kissing Emma but cannot confront them.
Karenās mental health deteriorates. She vandalizes Owenās bus stop ad and then buys duct tape and a box cutter. Her plan: murder Emma, carve the Heartbreak Killerās symbol into her chest, and frame Owen.
Meanwhile, Owen has another stalker: Alexandria Sutton, a former receptionist he had an affair with. Alexandria threatens to tell his wife and begins stalking Emma as well.

Karen sneaks into Emmaās apartment but hides when Owen arrives. Owen takes Emma to the Sleepaway Motel to hide from Alexandria.
There, he accidentally reveals he is married. Emma breaks up with him and leaves in a taxi. Owen returns home and begs Karen for forgiveness. She briefly accepts his apology, putting her knife away.
The peace shatters when Detective Jennifer Nahas questions them about Alexandriaās disappearance.
Owen demands a divorce. Karen steals his phone and sees a text from Emma setting up a meeting at the motel.
Karen grabs two kitchen knives and drives to the motel.
Inside the room, she finds Owen and Alexandria dead on the bed. Both have stab wounds and the Heartbreak Killerās cross-heart symbol carved into their chests. Karenās personal journal sits on the nightstand. Police arrest Karen on the spot.
The final chapters reveal the truth. Emma is the real Heartbreak Killer. Her first victim was her abusive, cheating father when she was eighteen.
She carved the heart-with-an-X to show he had no heart. Over the years, she targeted other āheartlessā wrongdoers.
When Alexandria attacked Emma outside the motel, Emma killed her in self-defense. She then followed Owen home, read Karenās journal, and decided to frame her. Emma lured Owen back to the motel, killed him, staged the bodies, left Karenās journal, and tipped off the police.
In the epilogue, Karen faces life in prison.
Her lawyer urges a plea deal because the evidence is overwhelming. Emma leaves a gift for Chloe, throws her fatherās rusty toolbox into a dumpster, and moves back to the countryside. She takes a job as a clinic receptionist and meets a handsome stranger at a bar.
The story ends with her motherās mantra: āNever give up on love.ā
