A Blade of Blood and Shadow Summary: Full Story

Spoilers ahead.

Lyra is a nineteen-year-old half-hunter living in the Blood Quarter under Silas, a hunter who keeps his people in permanent debt.

She hunts vampires at night so their blood and venom can be sold on the black market.

Silas and his senior hunters treat her as inferior because they believe her mother was mortal.

To disappear for good, Lyra visits Julian, a mortal antiques dealer, and asks him to find the apokropos stone. Julian demands her witchwood blade as payment, the only item left by her unknown father.

She agrees and gives him a month.

A month later, Lyra detours to Julian’s shop while running a blood delivery.

She finds Julian possessed by a higher demon, along with two hooded companions. A battle destroys the shop and Silas’s blood shipment.

Lyra kills a fire demon with her witchwood blade, but a third demon invades her mind. A winged dark fae named Kaden arrives, drives the demons off, and heals her burns before vanishing.

Unable to return to Silas, Lyra hides with her estranged friend Imogen, a witch. Adelaide, the coven leader, warns that higher demons mean someone is collapsing the realm’s wards. She sends Lyra to the Ringmaster at a dark fae circus.

The Ringmaster reveals the stone was made by the gods for a witch of the Coranthe line. He claims he does not know where it is now. When Lyra returns to Imogen’s apartment, the home is ransacked and Imogen is gone.

Silas ordered the kidnapping to punish Lyra. Before she can act, the half-ogre buyer Gorm and two henchmen ambush her. Wounded and bleeding, Lyra releases an involuntary burst of raw magic that kills all three.

Kaden carries her back to the apartment and heals her. He finds the scar tissue carved into her back by Silas and tells her the truth: she is half-hunter and half-witch of the extinct Coranthe line.

Silas’s house is hidden behind cloaking wards. Kaden offers to help Lyra bypass them if she joins him for dinner. At a diner, he proposes stealing a magical cipher from his cousin, the fae noble Caladwyn.

Kaden brings her to his glamoured estate, the House of Guile, and dresses her for Caladwyn’s manor party. He flies her there, waltzes with her to create a distraction, then brawls with a fae who insults them both.

Lyra slips away and finds the golden cipher in Caladwyn’s study. A ward blocks her, and Caladwyn catches her. She strikes a bargain: the cipher and safe passage in exchange for never entering the Quartz Palace in Anvalyn.

Kaden reacts with fury when he learns of the bargain, revealing Caladwyn is manipulating royal succession in Anvalyn. He takes the cipher and dismisses her. The next day he returns and takes her to Salandar’s Rare Books and Tomes.

Ancient texts reveal that the Coranthe witches were the original coven created by the gods to weave the veil between realms. A manuscript by the witch Mankara lies in “the in-between,” guarded by the Watchman.

Kaden and Lyra enter the in-between through a pool in vampire collector Mirabella’s crypt. They cross a ship graveyard, fight hive-minded Vikkarni beasts, and Kaden is bitten by venom fatal to dark fae.

In a vast cavern, they leap across stone columns above undead merpeople to reach Mankara’s chest. Lyra’s Coranthe magic opens it. The Watchman appears and drowns them in a whirlpool.

Lyra wakes in a sea cave with the dying Kaden. Mankara’s text appears, and she absorbs its power, melting the iron bars so they can escape. She drags Kaden home and forces him to drink the antivenom.

After she saves his life, their conversation turns intimate. While reaching into his jacket, Lyra finds the apokropos stone. Kaden confesses he is a half-demon prince sent by his father to hunt her.

Lyra flees with the cipher and the book. She learns the cipher requires Coranthe blood, pricks her thumb, and activates it. That night she returns to Silas’s block and unravels the cloaking wards.

In the basement she finds Imogen manacled beside starved vampires. Silas and four hunters ambush them. Silas reveals the wards were bound to a witch’s life by blood oath, so Imogen is dying now that they are destroyed.

Lyra weaves an invisibility ward, kills Vince, Kyle, and Alessio, then duels Silas. He stabs her in the gut, but she drives her dagger through his throat. Imogen dies in her arms.

Grief triggers an explosive blast of magic that implodes the house. Two higher demons arrive to capture her, and Adriel intervenes on behalf of the Dark Prince. Kaden arrives in full demon form and scatters them.

Kaden carries the dying Lyra through a rift into another realm and heals her in Adraeis, where time moves differently.

She realizes he is the Dark Prince and son of Demon King Semphrys.

Kaden explains his father plans to destroy the veil between realms using a Coranthe witch. He admits he used the stone to get close to her, but says his feelings are real and he needs her help to stop his father. The novel ends there.
