A Magic So Deadly Summary: Betrayal, Blood & Hidden Power

TL;DR: One Bite, Two Natures, One Betrayal

Imagine waking up in a dungeon cell, poisoned and stabbed, only to learn your heart now runs on someone else’s blood.

That is Samara’s reality at the start of A Magic So Deadly, Vasilisa Drake’s second Kingdom of Dark Magic novel. Saved from death by Vampire King Raphael, she must learn to live as the creature she was raised to hate.

Worse, she carries a secret that could get her executed: she is the Necromancer, a witch born every two hundred years with the power to destroy vampires.

Set on the divided continent of Eurobis, this dark romantasy follows Samara through bloodlust, a forced bond, and a love that should be impossible.

  • Samara is poisoned and stabbed by a witch spy, then turned into a vampire by King Raphael to save her life.
  • She hides a lethal identity: she is the Necromancer, the one witch with dominion over the undead.
  • A fledgling bond physically tethers her to Raphael until she learns to accept what she has become.
  • Court politics, a diplomatic mission south, and an assassination attempt push her toward her forbidden feelings.
  • The book ends on a major cliffhanger that reshapes Samara’s place in the war between witches and vampires.

A Magic So Deadly Summary: The Full Plot (Spoilers)

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the complete story, including the ending and cliffhanger.

The continent of Eurobis divides into the Witch Kingdom and three vampire monarchies: the West under Raphael, the South under Julian, and the North under Queen Ophelia.

Vampires there are immortal, sunburned predators who cannot speak direct lies. Witches hold elemental magic, while voids — humans born without power — are treated as lesser beings.

The story resumes with Samara waking in the dungeons of Castle Damerel. Titus, the Witch King’s spymaster, has poisoned and stabbed her, and Raphael turned her into a vampire to keep her alive.

She refuses donor blood for weeks until Raphael orders her to feed from his neck, completing her transformation and unleashing supernatural speed, strength, and volatile emotions.

Truth compulsion now makes lying impossible for her. General Demos accuses Samara of regicide over her old role in a poisoning scheme, but Raphael shuts the accusation down.

Among her belongings she finds the Black Grimoire, a spellbook that burns her vampiric skin, and its Old Runyk pages confirm her worst fear: she is not a powerless void but the Necromancer.

Since past Necromancers were executed by vampire kings, she hides the book and tells only Amalthea.

The fledgling bond adds a physical chain. It causes cramps and paralysis whenever Samara strays more than 548 paces from Raphael.

She renounces her title as his Chosen and moves to new quarters, yet tries to build a routine — sword training, gambling nights, and walks through Damerel’s lower city, where Raphael shows her abandoned void children raised in vampire families. Her hatred of vampires begins to fracture.

At a royal ball, Raphael dances with Samara to shield her from swarming courtiers. Amalthea then departs on a secret mission to Ioni, promising to find something that will help.

During sparring, Raphael orders a starving Samara to feed from him again, and the feeding collapses into a kiss — and Samara pinning her king at swordpoint.

An urgent summons from King Julian pulls the court south to Limanos, a coastal city full of fae, shifters, and witches. On the road, Raphael offers a deal: live two weeks as a vampire without self-loathing, and he will help her break the bond.

In Limanos, A Magic So Deadly shifts into court intrigue and closeness — Raphael teaches Samara to thrall humans, she practices until she can overpower even his thralls, and Amalthea searches Ioni’s frozen valleys for a hidden Necromancer relic.

Danger arrives through Sir Ferro, a witch knight traveling with the fae delegation. He lures Samara into his workspace, locks cursed copper shackles on her wrists, and reveals he is hunting the Black Grimoire for the Witch Kingdom.

Cornered, Samara activates a freeze card from his deck and drains him dry to survive. Demos helps conceal the body while Raphael absorbs her guilt.

During the Skyflame Celebration, Samara burns her old identity — “I am a powerless void” — and writes a new one: “I am a vampire. I am a witch.

I am a survivor.” That night, on a secluded beach, she and Raphael give in to each other completely. Afterward, he reveals the bond has dissolved, because it only held while she rejected her own nature.

At the final masquerade, King Julian reveals he is Raphael’s twin brother and dances with Samara to bait him. When Julian stages a kiss, Raphael attacks, and Samara freezes him mid-strike with Necromancer magic — exposing her secret.

She flees into the forest, but Raphael follows, refuses to fight, and admits he has known what she is since her first night in the dungeons. He declares his love and promises to always choose her.

The ending moves fast. Julian has already sent a wyvern messenger to Queen Ophelia naming Samara the Necromancer, so Samara erases his memory of her identity to protect Raphael.

Amalthea then arrives with worse news: Ophelia is under thirty minutes away, and anyone who shelters Samara will die for treason.

Devastated, Samara thralls Demos, then Raphael, wiping every memory of her secret. Before the thrall takes hold, Raphael kisses her and vows: “I love you, Samara Koisemi. And I will not forget that.”

Amalthea activates Ferro’s transport card and teleports them across Eurobis — straight into the throne room of Witch King Vaughn in Ulryne.

There, Amalthea kneels in fealty, revealing she has served the Witch King all along. Vasilisa Drake ends A Magic So Deadly on that double blow, as Samara greets her sovereign and captor: “Hello, Father.”
