The continent is split between three powers.
Astranza thrives on King Theodore’s weather magic. Incendar holds iron but suffers drought under King Maddox Kyronan’s fire magic.
Draegonis wages war along the borders.
Princess Marjoriana, called Jory, endures dress fittings for a wedding she does not want. Her father has ordered every flame in the kingdom doused at sunset so the visiting Incendrian king cannot use his fire magic.
Her brother, Crown Prince Dane, tells her the truth behind the match: King Theodore is dying and his magic is fading.
That night, Jory’s exiled childhood friend Asher slips into her room. He leaves a maid’s uniform “just in case.” Asher is a marked former slave who now works as a Hunter’s Guild assassin.
Jory uses the disguise to spy on the Incendrian delegation. She accuses a scuffed, black-armored soldier of cruelty, only to learn he is King Maddox Kyronan himself. Ky is impressed and later meets her privately, shedding his weapons to show good faith.
The meeting breaks apart when Asher crashes through the window. He carries two sealed contracts from Guildmaster Pavok: one ordering Ky’s death, stamped with the Crown’s seal and paid in Incendrian silver, and one ordering Jory’s death. Rather than run, Jory proposes they kidnap Ky and uncover the mastermind behind the contracts.
They bind and gag Ky and escape through a secret sewer passage into the frozen wilderness. In an abandoned hut, Ky denies issuing any hit on Jory.
Asher reveals the seven branded lines on his face, marks earned from slavers after his mother, Lady Clara, was executed for alleged treason.
Ky creates a flaming sphere and signals his soldiers.
Captain Sevin Zale and the elite squad find them, reporting that Prince Dane holds Sev hostage at the palace. Back in Perriden, Pavok denies issuing the contracts, and Dane frames Asher as a Draegonis traitor.
To save Asher, Ky claims jurisdiction over the attack as a crime against Incendar. He takes on Asher’s million-silver debt and decrees that Jory will travel to Incendar as his guest for thirty days.
On the road south, Asher breaks a carriage support and ambushes Ky. Ky unlocks Asher’s cuffs and chains Asher to his own wrist instead. At a roadside inn, Jory confronts Asher about his past in brothels, fighting rings, and slave posts.
Two Guild assassins, Logan and Gunnar, infiltrate their room that night. Jory, Asher, and Ky kill them together, proving Pavok sent backup killers to ensure both targets died.
In Incendar’s borderlands, the group rescues a Suross settlement from a burning hut, where Jory stabs a disguised Draegonis soldier.
At the capital of Lastalorre, starving citizens riot against Ky’s fire magic. Jory dismounts, calms them, and promises grain from Astranza’s winter stores. In the palace, Ky introduces his hidden sister, Princess Victoria, who lives in isolation because of her volatile fire magic.
In the enchanted Hall of Stars, Jory tells Ky that King Theodore is dying, exposing Dane’s manipulation. Jory, Ky, and Asher form a direct pact, and their romantic and physical connection culminates in an intimate encounter in the heated pools.
Before dawn, three assassins enter Ky’s bedchamber. Ky summons an inferno, killing them but setting the room ablaze. In the hallway, Jory and Asher catch Lady Charlotte acting suspiciously.
Under Ky’s fire, Charlotte confesses that Crown Prince Dane coerced her into leaving cloth scraps to guide Draegonis assassins. A dying assassin stabs her dead.
Jory, Ky, and Asher piece together Dane’s full betrayal: he conspired with Draegonis and Guildmaster Pavok to kill Ky, frame Asher, and eliminate Jory.
Jory formally accepts the alliance with Ky. Asher places his hand over theirs and declares that to take down Prince Dane, what they truly need is a Hunter.
