Blood of Elves Summary: The Deep Dive
Spoilers follow.
Andrzej Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves opens after the fall of Cintra. Ciri, the young princess and granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, flees the burning city while a black knight with a winged helmet pursues her.
Geralt of Rivia finds her in the forests of Transriver and takes her to Kaer Morhen.
At the ruined mountain fortress, the witchers Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert, and Coen train Ciri in physical conditioning and sword work. They do not subject her to the mutagenic Trial of Grasses.
Triss Merigold arrives and discovers that Ciri is a Source. After Ciri drinks a mild witcher elixir, she enters violent, prophetic trances that frighten her guardians.
Triss recommends that Ciri be educated by a more experienced magician. In spring, Geralt, Ciri, and Triss leave Kaer Morhen.
Triss falls dangerously ill, and the group joins a heavily guarded caravan led by the dwarf Yarpen Zigrin and the royal commissar Vilfrid Wenck.
The caravan is a decoy designed by King Henselt to test the dwarves and trap Scoia’tael rebels. At the elven ruins of Shaerrawedd, Geralt tells Ciri the history of the rebel Aelirenn.
Soon after, the caravan is ambushed. Several dwarves die, Wenck is mortally wounded, and Ciri is saved when Geralt kills an elf who hesitates after seeing a white rose she wears.
In Oxenfurt, the bard Dandilion is tortured by the renegade mage Rience, a Nilfgaardian agent seeking Ciri. Yennefer of Vengerberg rescues Dandilion and burns Rience’s face before he escapes through a portal.
Geralt takes a barge protection job on the Pontar Delta to draw Rience out. On the river, he kills corrupt Temerian guards and defeats an aeschna, but is injured.
The medical student Shani hides Geralt in Oxenfurt. Redanian intelligence head Dijkstra and the enchantress Philippa Eilhart pressure Dandilion to hand over the witcher.
Geralt, with Philippa’s help, locates Rience’s contact Myhrman. Rience arrives with the Michelet brothers. In a street fight, Geralt kills the assassins, but Philippa freezes him with magic to let Rience escape.
Philippa then executes the surviving assassin to protect her political faction.
At Hagge Castle, the Northern kings secretly decide that Ciri must be found and killed for reasons of state. Emperor Emhyr var Emreis orders Rience to assassinate Geralt and gives Cahir, the black knight, one last chance to capture Ciri alive.
At the Temple of Melitele in Ellander, Ciri studies history and geography and befriends a young scribe named Jarre. Yennefer arrives to train her.
Their relationship grows from tension into a close bond. Yennefer teaches Ciri to draw magical energy from water veins and forbids her from using fire.
During a ritual at an ancient monolith, Yennefer helps Ciri confront her nightmares of the black knight and Cintra’s fall. Ciri gains control over her telepathic and psychokinetic abilities.
The novel ends with crows filling the sky. Yennefer and Ciri dress as men and ride away from the temple into an uncertain world. Their destination is left unresolved.
