Uprooted Summary: The Full Plot
Spoiler warning: This section reveals the entire plot, including the ending.
In Uprooted by Naomi Novik, a quiet valley is protected by an immortal wizard named Sarkan, called the Dragon, from the corrupting forest known as the Wood.
Every ten years, the Dragon takes a seventeen-year-old girl from the valley to serve in his tower. The girls return a decade later changed and unable to remain home.
Agnieszka, an untidy woodcutter’s daughter, has always expected her brave, beautiful friend Kasia to be chosen. At the harvest choosing, Sarkan unexpectedly selects Agnieszka after she takes a conjured flame from his hand, revealing hidden magic. She is dragged to his white marble tower.
In the tower, Agnieszka struggles with Sarkan’s impatient, precise teaching methods. When forced to cast “Lirintalem,” she instinctively transforms a cold meal into a rich feast. She finds a hidden note from a previous tower girl advising her to find her own path.
Prince Marek arrives, obsessed with rescuing his mother, Queen Hanna, lost to the Wood twenty years prior. He attempts to assault Agnieszka in her bedchamber.
She uses a protective armor spell and knocks him unconscious with a brass tray. Sarkan heals Marek and alters his memory to hide Agnieszka’s identity.
While Sarkan is away hunting a chimaera, a beacon-fire signals an attack on Dvernik. Agnieszka escapes the tower and returns home. She uses potions and intuitive magic to burn corrupted cattle and crush white wolves with thorny vines.
A neighbor, Jerzy, is severely corrupted, so she turns him to stone until a cure can be found. Sarkan arrives but is clawed by a wolf and infected with the Wood’s green corruption.
Agnieszka uses the ancient witch Jaga’s herbal and vocal magic to purge Sarkan’s corruption, proving her unique magical style.
Kasia is abducted by the Wood’s walkers. Agnieszka disobeys Sarkan, enters the forest, and pulls Kasia’s body from a living heart-tree.
Back at the tower, Sarkan and Agnieszka cast “Luthe’s Summoning” together, revealing that the Wood is manipulating Kasia to trick Agnieszka into killing Sarkan. They burn the inner Wood and free Kasia.
Prince Marek and court wizard Solya arrive to execute Kasia under anti-corruption laws. Agnieszka and Sarkan prove their cleansing method works on Jerzy, so the crown forces them to help rescue Queen Hanna.
The military expedition into the Wood is a disaster; many soldiers are killed by giant silver mantis creatures.
At the heart-tree, Sarkan is seized by bark. They cast purging fire together, destroying the tree and pulling Queen Hanna free. The queen is completely unresponsive but free of active corruption. Marek and Solya bring her to the capital, Kralia.
In Kralia, Agnieszka is inducted onto the list of wizards after causing a localized earthquake. At the queen’s trial, Agnieszka casts an illusion of the heart-tree battle, prompting Queen Hanna to speak and accuse Rosya, sparking a call for war.
Agnieszka realizes the rescue was a trap: the queen is a hollow puppet for the Wood-queen to provoke war between Polnya and Rosya. Chaos erupts.
King Kasimir is killed by a mutated beast. Crown Prince Sigmund is ambushed and killed. Alosha dies defending the royal children Stashek and Marisha, giving Agnieszka her sword “Hatol.”
Agnieszka and Kasia flee with the children back to Sarkan’s tower. Sarkan and the Baron defend the valley against Marek’s manipulated army.
Agnieszka and Sarkan construct stone walls and become lovers. Marek’s army besieges the tower with cannon-fire and the invulnerable queen.
The battle reaches the subterranean tomb. The Wood-queen kills Marek. Agnieszka and Sarkan cast the Summoning again, revealing the Wood-queen’s origin: centuries ago, she was imprisoned in a stone tomb by the first people who feared her power.
Closed in the dark, she became bitter and hateful, creating the corrupting Wood.
Kasia stabs the Wood-queen with Hatol. The queen escapes as white smoke. Agnieszka and Sarkan follow her into the deepest heart of the Wood.
Instead of destroying her with fire-heart, Agnieszka uses Jaga’s spell “Vanalem” to transform the Wood-queen into an ordinary, non-malevolent silver-barked heart-tree beside her sister Linaya. This breaks the Wood’s active malice.
In the aftermath, Sarkan returns to the capital to help rebuild the court.
Agnieszka remains in the Wood to systematically cleanse remaining corrupted trees. Kasia becomes captain of the guard in Gidna, serving the young King Stashek.
At harvest-time, Sarkan returns to the valley, and Agnieszka takes his hand to introduce him to her mother.
