The novel unfolds in a near-future America where the Rightful Choice Act, known as B3, lets prisoners serving 25 years or more volunteer for the CAPE program.

Participants become Links, bound into teams called Chains and fitted with magnetic shackles grafted under the skin.

These magcuffs connect each Link to a mobile tracking post called the Anchor. Unsanctioned speech or movement triggers electric shocks, or punishment from an Influencer’s pain rod.

The program runs across four environments. The March is the cross-country walk between stops, broadcast on pay-per-stream and the secondary network LinkLyfe.

Camp is the branded nightly stop where Links buy rations and weapons with Blood Points earned from kills and popularity.

Hub Cities are municipal stops for mandatory public service and fan interaction. The BattleGround is the televised stadium where deathmatches end in termination.

After former Grand Colossal Sunset Harkless dies during an unmonitored BlackOut night, Thurwar takes absolute leadership of A-Hamm. She establishes “Sunset’s Rule,” an absolute ban on Links harming one another outside the arena.

Staxxx then confesses to the Chain that she killed Sunset. She later tells Thurwar the full context: Sunset, terrified of re-entering a society he despised, had begged Staxxx to help him die on his own terms.

As the Chain marches on, public debate over CAPE intensifies. During a live Sports Central broadcast, anchor Tracy Lasser delivers an abolitionist manifesto on air and walks off set to join the protest movement.

In Old Taperville, Staxxx’s hometown, thousands of anti-CAPE protesters clash with police. Among them is Mari Harkless, Sunset’s daughter, who slips Thurwar a card with leaked corporate documents.

The documents reveal a secret Season 33 rule change: no single Chain may hold two Colossal-ranked Links. If a second Link reaches Colossal rank, the two must duel to the death.

Thurwar realizes Staxxx will reach Colossal rank after her next victory, meaning the system is engineering a fight between them.

A parallel thread follows the Sing-Attica-Sing Chain. Hendrix “Scorpion Singer” Young is a one-armed Link who wields the spear Spinifer Black and sings work songs to hold onto his mind.

He is paired with Simon J. Craft, a man pushed into violent delirium by prolonged solitary confinement and Influencer torture. Guided by Singer, Craft becomes an unstoppable force on the Circuit.

In the Season 32 finale doubles match, Thurwar and Staxxx face Singer and Jungle Craft in a marquee bout. Mid-match, Mari Harkless runs onto the BattleGround holding a sign reading “LIFE IS PRECIOUS” before soldier-police drag her away.

Thurwar hurls Hass Omaha across the arena and strikes Singer in the head, killing him instantly. Craft drops his arms and cradles Singer’s body, and Staxxx executes him with her scythe.

Staxxx’s victory lifts her to Colossal rank. Announcer Micky Wright then reads the new Season 33 mandate live: Angola-Hammond now holds two Colossals, so Thurwar and Staxxx must meet in a mandatory deathmatch on Freeing Day, one week later.

On their last BlackOut night, the two women stand at the edge of a canyon. They affirm their love and vow that whichever survives will carry their shared abolitionist message into the world.

On Freeing Day, before a silent stadium, Thurwar gives a final speech forgiving the audience and declaring the humanity of all Links. The two then fight a fierce, masterful duel.

As the battle peaks, Staxxx deliberately turns the blunt edge of LoveGuile toward Thurwar, allowing Hass Omaha to strike her down.

She dies in Thurwar’s arms, and Loretta Thurwar is granted High Freedom.

Thurwar steps into the world grieving and transformed, committed to ending the killing games. The novel closes on that note of loss and ongoing resistance.
