Daggermouth Summary: The Full Story (Major Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: the following summary reveals the entire plot, including the ending. Stop here if you want to go in blind.

New Found Haven is ruled by President Maximus Serel through his militant Veyra enforcers. The city’s elite live in the inner Heart behind ritual masks; seeing an unmasked elite face outside a marriage Vow carries an automatic death penalty.

Greyson Seren serves as the Heart’s public Executioner. Unknown to his father, he also runs contraband antibiotics and suppressants into Veyra patrol vehicles as “SIG02,” aiding lower-ring rebels.

During a broadcast execution of a rebel couple, Greyson hesitates before firing, and Captain Mikel takes the shot. To punish the hesitation, Maximus orders Greyson into a mandatory Vow with the elite Moraine Daunt.

In the Boundary’s Wolf’s Head tavern, the Daggermouth guild master Jaeger Nolin hires Shadera Kael for the contract that opens Daggermouth: assassinate Greyson and bring back his mask. Shadera accepts out of vengeance — Maximus executed her parents twenty years earlier.

She says goodbye to her lover, the marksman and rebel smuggler Jameson Vine, then infiltrates the Heart through maintenance tunnels.

She corners Greyson in Haven Tower’s ceremony room before his Vow. Their duel ends with Shadera shooting him in the abdomen — and Greyson deliberately removing his mask in front of her, breaking the capital mask law.

Greyson survives under the knife of Doctor Knowles. Shadera is thrown into the Tower dungeon, and when guards beat her, the inmate Prisoner 3421 sings the outlawed old-world anthem, igniting a prison uprising that ends in a Veyra massacre.

Maximus demands both prisoners be executed.

Elara Serel, Greyson’s mother, invokes a legal loophole she wrote herself: if a mask falls accidentally, execution can be avoided if the two complete the Vow with each other.

Maximus instead stages a public engagement and confines Greyson and Shadera together in a monitored apartment.

Locked in, the two enemies clash physically and verbally, but shared trauma starts to bridge the gap.

Greyson’s best friend Callum Thane rigs synthetic surveillance loops to blind Maximus’s cameras, and Greyson’s sister Lira gifts Shadera a custom obsidian skull mask. Jameson discovers Shadera’s captivity and vows to free her.

Callum interrogates the council member Davish Cross and learns Maximus is hoarding food and medicine meant for the outer rings. Maximus escalates by threatening to carpet-bomb the Boundary clinics where Jameson works if the couple refuses the Vow.

When seven Veyra officers raid the apartment, Greyson and Shadera fight side by side and kill them all.

An adrenaline-fueled near-encounter stops cold when a photograph falls — showing Greyson with his dead brother Brooker. Shadera realizes Brooker was Levi Pierce, the target of her old Contract 205.

Jameson, Jaeger, and a Daggermouth unit infiltrate the Heart disguised in Veyra armor.

Jameson confronts Shadera at Club Thane, and Greyson interrupts — revealing he is SIG02, the anonymous benefactor supplying the Boundary clinics. Facing the threat of the Boundary’s destruction, Shadera chooses to stay with Greyson.

In H. M. Wolfe’s climax, Maximus cages the pair in adjacent glass cells and tortures Shadera within Greyson’s hearing.

He reveals that Brooker was the rebel Levi Pierce, and that Maximus himself hired the Daggermouths to kill his own son to stop a coup. He also unveils “The Culling” — a plan to gas the populations of the Cardinal and the Boundary.

At the public Vow ceremony, Lira springs a media revolt. When the veil lifts, Greyson and Shadera stand completely unmasked, Lira strips off her own mask and gown, and hundreds of elite women in the crowd follow in mass defiance.

Then Brooker Serel appears alive — his death was faked with Maximus to trap the rebellion, and he executes Callum in front of Lira. Maximus adds one more revelation: Greyson’s biological father is not him, but Captain Mikel, the product of Elara’s affair.

A firefight erupts on the platform, and Mikel dies stepping in front of a bullet meant for Greyson.

Elara guns down the remaining guards, forces her husband to his knees, and reveals her rebel code name: “Python.”

Quoting that mercy exists in New Found Haven — just not for him — she executes President Maximus Serel on live broadcast.
