Maggie wakes up naked, starving, and empty-handed in a ditch in Kair Toren, capital of the kingdom of Rellas.
She quickly realizes she has landed at the start of chapter one of The Rise of Kair Toren, her favorite unfinished series by Adrian Latour.
Desperate for money, she ambushes a thief named Lecke on Estret Bridge with a grapefruit-sized rock and steals his canvas money bag. Lecke stabs her, slits her throat, and dumps her body in the river.
She wakes up uninjured on Ogden Island and understands the truth: she cannot stay dead. There she also rescues Sushi, a small red otter-cat called a stelka, from a translucent water monster.
Back in the city barefoot, she receives coins from Duke Ramond vi Everard, the Sleepless Duke, to buy shoes. His silver noma later buys her entry to the Garden of Soft Blossoms, an upscale house run by Galiene of Sosna.
Inside, Maggie spots Ulmar Hreban, a noble she knows is destined to murder Galiene and burn Kair Toren. She warns Galiene about his plan to kidnap her five-year-old daughter, Adelai.
After watching Hreban cut off a thief’s hands “in contemplation,” Maggie decides to fight back.

Posing as a helpless captive, Maggie sells herself to slave-monger Derog Olgren through the fixer Darotha. In Derog’s dungeon she finds five children, including seventeen-year-old Clover and twelve-year-old lock-picker Kaiden.
Reynald cuts down the guards, Maggie beats the bookkeeper Lasa to death when he threatens Kaiden, and Derog’s throat is opened so the blademaster can finish him.
Maggie resurrects shortly after, and her group claims Derog’s fortified house. Veteran mercenary Gort Magnar, his wife Shana, and sons Will and Lute join as household guards while eleven corpses go out to the sea monsters.
Maggie and Clover launch a soap-making business while she traces Hreban’s operations. She learns that Hreban and Indora Yolenta are smuggling weapons-grade gray iron inside pink salt barrels to arm border rebels.
To stop eighty mercenaries from being slaughtered at Falcon Point as a distraction, her team steals a marked barrel off the Yolentas’ pier.
The exposed ingots destroy the corrupt broker Filderon. At the Dog Market, a mutilated corpse then leads Maggie to the Dog Market Butcher — a serial killer Hreban is using to murder knights and seize the Justice Chamber. She leaks the smuggling plot to rattle him.
During a rooftop battle at Knight Vanquisher Plaza, the Butcher escapes with magic morr-beads, but his opponent answers with green Fatefire.
The flames expose the story’s central disguise: “Reynald” is actually Duke Ramond vi Everard, living under his dead friend’s name. Soon after, Solentine legally adopts Maggie into the noble Demarr family as Lady Marigold Demarr.
The Butcher — disgraced knight Serem Vor — kidnaps Maggie and stabs her to death on his workbench. She wakes while he eats, takes a heavy mace, and bashes his skull in before Everard arrives. The Shears frame Hreban’s men for the killings.
Maggie hands Hreban’s magically binding “life chain” contracts (lugur campur) to Sun Margrave Colart Jenicor, and Hreban is arrested. With Isadau, a seventh-circle mage Maggie rescued from a mind-shattering spell, she raids Hreban’s secret island vault for the Butcher’s contract.
At the grand Joedurar ceremony at Eagle Roost, Earl Doran Arvel publicly courts Maggie, and Everard’s jealousy flares. Rumian Demarr, the fastest blade in Rellas, impales Hreban’s backup assassin, Cai of Sunder, mid-strike.
Then Estol Silveren, Lord Commander of the Redeemer Knights, reveals himself as Mirabor Savaric — son of an executed rebel prince — and attacks on a giant flying dursan with a horde behind him. Maggie poses as his dead mother with a stone of remembrance, stabs him in the kidney, and Everard slices the lead dursan in half with Fatefire.
Ilona Andrews closes the epilogue with quiet wins. Matheo Karis is safe and pledges loyalty to Everard, who sends Maggie an ancestral hair clip fit for a duchess.
