Anastasia Steele is a senior at Washington State University Vancouver. Her roommate Kate Kavanagh falls ill, so Anastasia travels to Seattle to interview billionaire CEO Christian Grey for the student newspaper.
She stumbles into his office and both are immediately struck by a physical attraction. Christian answers her questions about business and control while probing into her own life.
Christian later appears at Clayton’s Hardware in Portland, where Anastasia works, buying cable ties, masking tape, and rope. He invites her to coffee and agrees to a photo shoot for Kate’s article.
During the photo session he holds her gaze, and afterward he takes her hand while they walk. He pulls her back from a speeding cyclist and warns her to stay away from him.
A week later, Anastasia receives three rare first-edition Thomas Hardy novels from him with a cryptic note. After her final exams, she drinks heavily at a Portland bar and calls Christian.
