Half City Summary: The Deep Dive
Spoilers ahead. This section recounts the plot from beginning to end, including the ending.
Astera sits on the eastern seaboard and is cut in two by the Chasm, a crevasse ripped open millennia ago by the High Thane of the Brood. It is the oldest and largest gateway to the underworld, sealed by powerful lymantrians.
Freed deviants ā demons, vampires, werewolves, harpies ā settled in the city around it. North of the Chasm is wealthy and political; South of the Chasm, known as Babylon, is poorer, artistic, and dangerous.
Hidden inside Astera is Harker Academy for Deviant Defense, a warded college where young lymantrians train to hunt deviants. Vivienne Abbot lives in Babylon with her best friend Penny above a bar called Cobwebs.
Ten years earlier, her father David was murdered in front of her by twelve Brood demons. Her mother Beatrice became District Attorney and moved the family to the affluent Hesperides neighborhood.
Viv inherited her father’s aeon gene, which gives her heightened agility and a bloodlust she cannot fully control. After killing a demon on a subway car, she is intercepted outside the Fever Dream nightclub by Reid Graveheart.
Reid carries a seven-pointed branded mark on his neck and teaches combat at Harker. He offers her admission and hands her an ancient Lymantrian coin.
Viv uses the coin in a broken ticket machine at the Windsor Museum, opening a gateway to the academy. At orientation, Professor Gemeline Lisette and Dean Edgar Driscoll lay out strict rules against night travel, the Fickle Thicket, and unsupervised hunting.
Viv befriends first-years Peter Roydon, Kitty Briggs, Sophia Valentine, and Elliot Thompson. She later finds a 1994 photograph of her father on a lacrosse team.
In the library, she learns he was enrolled as David Cadell and changed his identity after graduation. Kitty then vanishes, leaving a dropout letter that Peter identifies as a forgery.
Wraiths breach the dormitories, and reanimated corpses crawl from a cemetery during a lacrosse game. A second student, Lyra Roth, goes missing.
Viv steals Reid’s staff key card to enter the restricted archives with Peter, Sophia, and Elliot. Using an enchanted compendium, they learn someone is brewing syrabraxa, the forbidden spell the High Thane once used to split the Chasm.
The ingredients include asphodel flowers, the Gnostic censer, and an aeon host. The armorer also confirms the Aeon’s Dagger was checked out under Kitty’s name the night of the zombie attack.
On Halloween, Viv ends her relationship with James Pine. She and Reid grow closer during a visit to the campus planetarium.
Viv and Sophia go to Fever Dream, where Viv confronts the White Stag, Deacon. She discovers he is Reid’s estranged brother and a demon who left the Brood, and he denies involvement in the disappearances.
The High Thane and a turned warlock then raid the Windsor Museum for the Gnostic censer. During the fight, Professor Lisette appears in combat gear and reveals she is Fiona, Viv’s boss and sister-in-law, working as a dichotomous shifter hunter.
Fiona shares a final clue: before dying, Viv’s father carved the number “26” into his palm. Viv checks the lacrosse photo and finds that player 26 is Edgar Driscoll, the Dean of Harker.
Driscoll was David Cadell’s classmate, turned to the Brood out of jealousy, killed David, and arranged the Harker kidnappings. He abducts Penny and takes her to the industrial docks to lure Viv into a trap.
Viv and Reid race to the shipping yards, where Reid draws off Brood henchmen while Viv finds Penny inside a container. Viv is captured by Driscoll and Finn, the High Thane’s son.
Driscoll explains the syrabraxa needs an aeon body as a living host rather than sacrificed blood. He embeds the spell directly into the skin of Viv’s back so the High Thane can use her to tear the Chasm open again.
Reid breaks into the warehouse and cuts through the Brood demons. Burning from the magic inside her, Viv takes her father’s dagger, which she names Hellion, and drives it into Driscoll’s heart.
Reid fights off Finn and the remaining forces and orders Viv to run. Viv frees Penny and leaves her at a police station with a cover story.
Wounded and carrying the spell bonded to her skin, Viv decides she cannot return to Harker or her family. She collapses on the doorstep of Fever Dream and tells Deacon that Reid is in danger before losing consciousness.
