Finding Noah Summary: Trauma, Redemption & Found Family

Introduction: The Weight of a Childhood Secret

Some children are born into the world already carrying the consequences of someone else’s violence.

That’s the starting point for Noah Mason, the central figure in Kelsey Kingsley’s Finding Noah, the second and final installment of the Born in Rain duology.

Born to a sixteen-year-old mother after a brutal assault, Noah spends his early years in the shadow of his biological father’s cruelty.

Years later, after finding stability with an ex-convict turned surrogate father, Noah becomes a police officer determined to protect others. But a cold trail from his past pulls him toward a vengeance he never saw coming.

Finding Noah Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

Warning: Major spoilers follow.

The novel opens with sixteen-year-old Rain giving birth at thirty weeks in her parents’ bathroom. She had concealed the pregnancy, which resulted from a violent assault by an older boy named Seth. Her father suggests adoption, but Rain refuses and names her son Noah.

By age six, Noah lives in constant fear of Seth’s outbursts toward Rain. Seth drags the boy to a filthy house in Massachusetts to collect stolen drug money from Tommy Nolan. Inside, Tommy’s son Benjamin strangles Noah in a dark room before Seth intervenes. Seth throws Benjamin aside, shoves Noah onto the porch, and moments later, a gunshot sounds from inside. Noah leaves convinced a murder has occurred.

Rain moves eight-year-old Noah to River Canyon, Connecticut, seeking a fresh start. At nine, Seth finds them again and assaults Rain inside their home. Terrified, Noah promises his mother he will save her one day.

At twelve, Noah befriends Soldier Mason, an imposing ex-convict who moves in next door and begins dating Rain. Soldier teaches Noah how to fight. At thirteen, Seth breaks in armed with a gun. Soldier tells Noah to escape through a window and run to the police station. On the phone, 911 dispatcher Meg Kinney comforts him as Seth critically wounds Soldier — before Rain shoots Seth dead.

Soldier survives, marries Rain, and legally adopts Noah. As a teenager, Noah struggles with shame about his origin and begins using drugs with Ash Montague. Meg confronts him, calling him a child who needs to process his trauma. At twenty, after a drunken incident at Mayor Fischer’s pool, Sergeant Patrick Kinney arrests Noah. Soldier lets him spend the weekend in a holding cell to teach accountability, and Meg brings him food and books.

Inspired to protect others, Noah enters the police academy and graduates at twenty-one. Meg ends her relationship with her boyfriend Jack, confesses her love for Noah, and they begin dating.

Five years later, twenty-six-year-old Noah works as a River Canyon police officer and lives with Meg in a fixer-upper home.

Tormented by nightmares of that night at Tommy Nolan’s house, he visits Seth’s incarcerated cousin, Levi Stratton, and learns Tommy Nolan’s name.

Meg finds Tommy’s obituary, which reveals he died that night, survived by his half-brother Gerald Crowley and son Benjamin. Against Meg’s warnings, Noah drives to Marblehead, Massachusetts, to investigate the Llewellyn Family Funeral Home, run by brothers Shawn and Abraham Crowley.

While stopping for coffee before returning home, Noah is ambushed and abducted by Benjamin Nolan. Benjamin chains Noah inside a basement bedframe for a week, beating and torturing him as revenge for Seth killing Tommy.

Unknown to Benjamin, the tall funeral director Abraham Crowley — masked as “The Man in Black” — secretly enters to treat Noah’s injuries, provide water and pain relief, and urge him to focus on safe memories with Meg.

When Benjamin learns police have found Noah’s car, he prepares to execute Noah. Abraham intervenes and shoots Benjamin dead.

His associates bandage Noah, blindfold him, and leave him at the Salem cemetery gates. Noah calls Soldier, who arrives with Meg and Patrick. Meg reveals she is pregnant.

Three months later, Noah attends therapy. Six months after that, Meg gives birth to their daughter, Helena Diane Mason. Noah visits Abraham Crowley one final time to express gratitude, confirm Benjamin’s arrest, and announce that his investigation is officially closed.
