Tropesick Book Summary: A Meta Romance of Grief and Second Chances

TL;DR: When the Tropes Start Happening for Real

A ghostwriter gets a career-saving assignment: finish a famous romance author’s stalled manuscript in three months. There is one catch.

Her co-writer is the boy from her childhood she has not spoken to in eight years.

Tropesick: A Love Story by Lauren Okie follows Katie Caruso and Tyler McNally as they outline a fictional romance at a beachfront estate.

Then the plot points they invent begin appearing in their own lives.

The novel moves between New York City, a secluded Hamptons property, and a working-class Long Island town.

It pairs breezy romantic comedy banter with a heavier thread about grief, addiction, and forgiveness.

Tropesick Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: this section covers the plot through the ending.

The Past in Stonyport

Eleven years before the main events, sixteen-year-old Katie spends a Long Island summer watching her older brother Mikey pitch. Tyler McNally, Mikey’s best friend, shares notebooks and snacks with her.

Tyler’s home life is unstable because of his absent, unfaithful father. He and Mikey begin experimenting with alcohol and drugs.

In December, Tyler drives Mikey home on icy roads while under the influence. The car crashes into an iron mailbox.

Mikey’s arm is shattered and held together with seven titanium screws. His professional baseball prospects end that night.

Both boys sink deeper into addiction. Eight years ago, Mikey leaves rehab and dies of an overdose at nineteen.

After the funeral, Katie’s mother Carolyn confronts Tyler and orders him to stay away from Katie forever. Tyler leaves for college in Providence without a word.

Present Day: The Contract

Katie is now twenty-five and secretly writing books under the name of famous romance novelist Meredith Bradford. Her agent Selma needs fifty thousand words in three months.

Selma hires Tyler, now twenty-seven, sober for nine years, and a published short-story writer. Selma does not know their history.

Tyler walks into Georgina’s café and Katie flees. Selma warns that refusing the contract means blacklisting, so they agree to collaborate remotely.

Selma summons them to Meredith’s twenty-five-acre Southampton estate. There, the reclusive author lets her Persian cat Pinot pick trope slips from a glass bowl to form their outline.

The tropes drawn include Grumpy Sunshine, Girl Next Door, Local Boy in the Way, Forced Proximity, Just One Bed, Kissing in the Rain, Secrets and Lies, and Meddlesome Ghost.

Forced Proximity

Back in the city, Katie’s building is evacuated for gas leaks and code violations. Selma and Meredith move Katie into the Southampton estate, then Tyler into the garden cottage.

Their draft follows fictional characters Willa and Henry. In real life, Katie casually dates Danny, a Manhattan attorney.

During a thunderstorm Katie is locked out of the main house and shelters in Tyler’s cottage. There is, as promised, just one bed.

They fall into the pool during the downpour, and the reunion they have avoided for eight years finally happens.

Confrontation and Collapse

On the eighth anniversary of Mikey’s death, Tyler takes Katie to the grave in Stonyport. They grieve together and trade stories from childhood.

Katie tells her mother that Tyler is back. Carolyn erupts and delivers an ultimatum: end it with him or lose the family.

Tyler decides he is wrecking her life again and prepares to leave. On the terrace, Katie calls him a coward who always runs.

He tells her about her mother’s banishment eight years earlier. He insists he does not deserve her and walks away.

The Twist

Katie returns to the city. Tyler breaks into Meredith’s off-limits carriage house and finds a wall tracking his and Katie’s lives in train tickets and timelines.

Meredith explains that she once had an affair with Tyler’s father, Tom McNally. She also reveals she died years ago, drowning in the ocean after Mikey’s funeral.

She has remained on the property as the Meddlesome Ghost of their outline. Having seen Tyler and Katie at the funeral, she arranged the contract through Selma to engineer their second chance.

Meredith tells Tyler to stop carrying the guilt and to fight for Katie.

The Resolution

Tyler wears a tuxedo to a Manhattan charity event and confesses his love publicly, declaring he is done running. He tells Katie the truth about Meredith, and they drive back to Southampton.

The estate is empty. Meredith and Pinot are gone, and a finished physical manuscript titled Tropesick is left behind.

One year later, Katie and Tyler sit on a Stonyport beach with salt-and-vinegar chips and notebooks. Tyler is published, Katie is writing under her own name, and they board the Manhattan-bound train together.

Quotes from The Book

“I realize there’s not much reading between the lines in romance novels, Katie, but rest assured: I know how to interpret subtext.”

“Love makes people happy! It makes the world go around! People read this stuff when they’re sad, when they’re horny, when they’re dying, when their lives are falling apart, when they’re too scared to—”

“There’s this idea… That art is suffering. That only suffering is art. It’s nonsense.”

“I am not what I did. I am not what I did.”

“You are not what you think you are, okay? You weren’t then, and you aren’t now.”

“When I close my eyes… it has always been you. You and you and only you.”

“I think we needed her. I think some stories, they’re just too big to be told without a little magic. Without a little make-believe.”
