Annie Adams is twenty-one, working double shifts at Charlie Barker’s, the retro Vermont diner her boyfriend Alex owns.
They have been together seven years, and the relationship runs on one thing — the car crash she caused at sixteen that left Alex with a traumatic brain injury.
Her older brother Tag plays any gig that will have him, while Annie fills napkins with lyrics she never sings. One snowy night, after drinks at Sand Bar with her friend Kenna, Tag stops at a gas station.
Inside, Chase Rhodes — a broke, twenty-four-year-old guitar builder — tries to steal a can of dog food for his Sheltie, Toaster. The clerk panics and shoots him in the thigh, and Chase bolts into Tag’s idling car, unaware Annie is asleep in the back.
She wakes mid-kidnapping, then realizes her captor is the one in danger.
At his house on Silverleaf Avenue, she patches his wound, smooths things over with Tag and the police, and leaves him a napkin note: “All the best songs have bridges / The strongest ones don’t burn.”

Annie stays. Parvati arranges a second opinion, Chase undergoes debulking surgery, and the tumor comes back stable.
The Ending of Pieces of the Night
Six months later, Honey Moons returns to The Soundproof, and Chase proposes to Annie onstage. She says yes.
The epilogue brings the wedding, a still-touring band, Tag’s new nonprofit Second Verse, an engagement between Tag and Kenna, and a house Chase and Annie build in Rutland.
Under a full honey moon, Chase says he sees “pieces” — and Annie understands them as pieces of a beautiful life still holding together.
