The Awl & Cradle and the Abduction
Saige Grayson, thirty-five, runs The Awl & Cradle book bindery in the mortal city of Hanniel after the death of her mentor, Leofric Bergmunn. She lives with severe chronic pain along her left side and owes money to the loan shark Ivor Thorne.
Unknown to Saige, Leofric had been hunted by servants of Malevron, the tyrant defeated two hundred years earlier during The Reckoning.
Malevron needs a master binder to repair the Confluence, an ancient tome holding the founding secrets of the Weave.
During the anniversary celebration of the war’s end, Thorne’s men and two branded Azkari warriors ambush Saige at the Copper Kettle tavern. Thorne sells her to the Azkari and keeps her friends Yevna and Raven as leverage.
Gravereach and the Magical Bargain
Saige is taken to Gravereach, a subterranean prison beneath Morzanmyre, and thrown into a cell beside a prisoner known as Ke-Vor.
He is Archer, an immortal warrior cursed by Malevron to exist as an incorporeal ghost visible only to branded followers.
Saige can see him, and her touch restores his physical form and reawakens his dormant black flame magic. Archer recognises her as the golden-haired mortal who once stabbed him with a paring knife in a Hanniel alley.
To save her friends and keep the tome from Malevron, Saige strikes an Azkari bargain with him. They seal the oath with a kiss, which detonates into onyx fire. Archer takes her place during a torture session before breaking them both out of Gravereach.
The Rescue in Hanniel
Back in the mortal realm, Archer hides his Azkari features with illusion magic while he and Saige infiltrate Thorne’s compound with Grim.
Archer kills the guards with interior black flames as Saige reaches Yevna and Raven.
He takes two arrows in the back shielding Saige, then burns the compound and interrogates Reid Farrow. Reid reveals the Confluence is hidden in the Temple of Truth inside the House of Reveries.
Quest for the Confluence
Saige, Archer, and Grim travel south across the Solmere River into the House of Reveries, pursued by branded mercenaries and joined by Archer’s brother Daemos. Along the way, Daemos reveals that Archer was once betrothed to an Azkari noblewoman named Isindrel.
At the Temple of Truth, the vault is sealed by an enchantment that demands honest answers. Archer admits he took Saige’s place on the torture racks and that thoughts of her kept him alive for a decade.
Saige confesses the humiliating financial choices she made to cover her medical debts.
Archer explains that Isindrel betrayed him two centuries ago for Malevron, and that he insisted on the kiss both to amplify his magic and because he wanted it.
The doors shatter, and Saige finds the Confluence in ruin.
Lifting the tome triggers shared visions of the final battle of The Reckoning, when Archer turned his flames inward and transformed his fire to onyx black.

Restoration at The Awl & Cradle
After escaping mirudytes through a portal, Saige begins disassembling and rebinding the manuscript in her shop. She needs gold pigment from the volcanic mountain of Ignizar, which she obtains through the color merchant Indigo Jack.
Thorne and Reid break into the bindery, and Thorne admits that Leofric was murdered by Malevron’s agents rather than dying of heart failure. Archer burns the two men and brands their necks with permanent scars.
A horde of mirudytes and a Souldren Elite then attack the street. To protect the book and everyone present, Archer transports Saige, Raven, Yevna, Daemos, and Grim to the court of Ignizar.
Revelations in Ignizar
In the Eros Atrium, Saige learns that Archer is Prince Archeron Dawnstrider, co-ruler of the House of Desires, and that Malevron is his eldest brother. Feeling deceived, she retreats to finish the gilding and binding.
That night Archer tells her he loves her, and they spend the night together. The next morning, a truth mirror in his chambers strips away a thirty-year-old illusion.
Saige remembers that her childhood village burned in black fire and that the Black Flame himself stood over her, having come to destroy a Malevron cult run by her parents.
He veiled her burns and her memory out of remorse, causing the chronic pain she has lived with ever since.
She rejects him and declares she will never forgive him.
The Meeting of Minds and the Cliffhanger
At the assembly known as the Meeting of Minds, Saige presents the restored Confluence. The book violently rejects every delegate who tries to claim it, leaving Saige as the only person able to carry it.
She announces that her end of the bargain is complete and moves to leave Ignizar. Archer raises a ring of black fire around her and tells her that Ignizar is not his true home.
Their ancestral home is Anwyn, where the book must be taken to be unmade, so the bargain is not finished. Trapped inside the flames, Saige touches her scarred neck and vows before the court: “Before this war is done, I will break you.”
