Ship of Spells Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers)
Spoilers ahead.
In H. Leighton Dickson’s Ship of Spells, Honor Renn’s frigate Dawn Watch is destroyed by the Rhi’Ahr cruiser Endorathil.
She survives in the sea as chimeric burns runescars into her hands and arms.
The privateer ship Touchstone rescues her, and she meets First Mate Devanhan Fahr, Surgeon Echo, Quartermaster Smoke Oakum, Bosun Buck, and Rigging Magister Kithriit.
Captain Gavriel Thanavar initially plans to drop Honor at a port.
The living ship is drawn to her chimeric scars. Fahr teaches her the Carmen Lumiere spell, and she learns to draw magic from the ship’s timbers.
At Hodgetown, the crew douses a Rhi’Ahr raid’s fires with a massive wave spell. Commodore Bracebridge’s Navy ship Templemore arrives, and Touchstone flees.
Honor becomes a chimeric chaser, tracking glowing underwater lines left by Rhi’Ahr ships. At Flogger’s Bay, she overhears a plot and is rescued from Bracebridge’s fusiliers.
Thanavar reveals that First Mate Fahr is actually Crown Prince Devhanus Bonavanczek, the Stolen Prince who ran away ten years ago. Thanavar hunts Rhi’Ahr ships to reclaim RuneTree wood for Touchstone.
The crew sails to Bilgetown, a floating barge-city. A parley turns into a trap, and an explosion breaks Bilgetown’s structural chains. Honor casts a massive wylde spell to stabilize the city and save its people. First Mate Dev is fatally wounded during the escape.
The Touchstone stops at the Isle of Haran to strip a sunken Rhi’Ahr ship, then races to Port Corvallan.
There, the Court of Sand tries to save Dev. Honor finds her estranged mother, Magister Valor Renn, among the ironmages. Honor combines Rhi’Ahr incantations with her wylde magic to bring Dev back from the dead.
Three ironmages join the crew. In a battle outside the harbor, Honor destroys the enemy cruiser Terrebith Fae.
The traitor aboard Touchstone is exposed as Worley, the old graymage steward.
He had sent swift birds to Commodore Bracebridge, revealing the ship’s positions and causing the Dawn Watch‘s destruction. Thanavar sentences Worley to keelhauling, and Worley dies. Thanavar appoints Honor as his new steward.

Pursued by six Navy cruisers and Rhi’Ahr warships, Thanavar charts a course into the Hall of Sheets and Hall of Silence. Rigging Magister Kit dies during a hurricane.
At the Dreadwall, Thanavar rides the vertical wall of water sideways. Honor binds herself to the mainmast and channels all her chimeric into the ship.
The Court of Sand casts Kinestorum spells, and Smoke deploys drag sails. The Touchstone breaks through to Lindurithain, the Cloudgate.
At the Cloudgate, the enemy flagship Endorathil attacks. The crew uses illusions to fake surrender.
Honor climbs down the hull and casts a final wylde spell, igniting the chimeric inside Endorathil and cleaving it in two.
Thanavar and Honor then channel chimeric into the sea to repair the Dreadwall, sealing the passage between helms forever.
Captain Thanavar chooses to remain behind on the Cloudgate as the last Priestlord.
Prince Devanhan takes command of the captured Marelethan with Smoke Oakum as captain, and sails back to Oversea to claim his birthright.
Honor Renn joins Prince Dev and the Navy fleet bound for High Temple. She carries her runescars, her identity as Aro’el, and the love of her captain. The story ends with “Not the end…”
