Darker Days Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

Bird Street’s fortune began in 1896, when founder James McKinley sealed a blood pact with an ancient entity the residents call the Accountant.
The Accountant appears as a tall man in a black suit carrying a leather briefcase and a copper jug.
In 1969, James’s son John McKinley killed his father and rebuilt the arrangement as a shared system among five families. The Lewises, Wachowskis, Nyholms, and Brennetts joined the McKinleys.
John restricted the sacrifices to terminally ill or suicidal people who wanted to die, a rule the neighbors describe as a lesser evil. The souls of the dead do not rest. They remain in the Snoqualmie Woods as hostile apparitions that also appear in mirrors.
The novel opens during the Darker Days of November 2022. Judge Ralph Lewis and four neighbors carry a terminally ill woman named Ann Olsen Dickinson into a lit clearing in the woods to administer a lethal drink.
Ann hesitates and voices fear. Ralph calls off the procedure, and the group carries her back out.
Ralph’s fifteen-year-old daughter Kaila is managing bipolar disorder and an increased lithium dose. She cuts her stomach with a potato knife to feel something.
From her attic window, Kaila films her father and the neighbors carrying a woman on a palanquin into the woods. When she confronts her parents, Ralph lies that the group runs a secret guerrilla assisted suicide operation.
Kaila searches online for former neighbor Rover Nyholm. She learns that after the Nyholm family left Bird Street in 2014, Rover lost his modeling career, became an addict, shot his parents, and killed himself.
Ten-year-old Django Lewis da Silva, a piano prodigy, pounds his Steinway until his fingers bleed. At the Wachowski alpaca patch, ten-year-old Liam Wachowski takes his father Marc’s loaded handgun from an open safe.
The gun fires, killing an alpaca named Sappy and spraying blood over Liam’s younger sister Harper. Marc then shoots the remaining alpaca.
As November continues without a completed sacrifice, the neighborhood deteriorates. A planned abduction of an Alzheimer’s patient named Garrett Wetzel fails, Dorothy McKinley falls into a coma, and Ralph relapses into secret drinking.
Luana meets the Accountant’s presence through visions, and Kaila receives a piece of volcanic glass from the entity at the Camp Heron Market. Olivia Davis tells Kaila on the swing set that the neighborhood’s prosperity is paid for with human lives.
After a house fire set by Django, Ralph sees a mirror vision of Kaila being led into the woods and rushes outside. The neighbors take a seventeen-year-old suicidal youth from Oregon, known as Levi, into the Snoqualmie Woods.
Levi changes his mind at the execution tree, and Elizabeth Aikman manipulates him into stepping off the ledge. He hangs, ending the 2022 Darker Days.
Spring and summer 2023 restore the neighborhood’s luck. Kaila turns sixteen, trains for diving in Seoul, and glimpses the Accountant in the bleachers.
In August, Django, Liam, and Harper crawl under the backyard fence and fall into a deep, root-lined well. Slithering hands of the dead move over their bodies before they escape.
On Halloween night 2023, Ralph attends a judicial reception in Seattle and drinks heavily. He drives home in heavy rain and strikes eleven-year-old Liam Wachowski, who is riding his bicycle near Bird Street.
Liam dies instantly. Ralph wraps the body in a blanket and hides it in his car trunk, then confesses to Luana at home.
Rather than report the accident, Ralph and Luana carry Liam’s corpse across the shed roof and bury him in an unmarked grave in the Snoqualmie Woods. Marc and Joyce Wachowski report their son missing the next day, and Ralph pretends to join the search.
Harry Aikman reviews CCTV footage from the Camp Heron Market and finds headlight flashes at 10:03 PM that point toward Ralph.
Django finds swastika pins Liam had ordered online and discovers a pile of branches manifesting inside Kaila’s attic room.
Kaila reads her father’s phone and finds Levi’s suicide note, then realizes her parents lied about a humane operation.
In the attic she meets the Accountant, who tells her that Luana signed a blood pact in São Paulo in 2002 after being declared infertile, making Kaila and Django the Firstborn children of the arrangement.
On November 2, bloodhounds searching the woods go rabid and tear off Maurice McKinley’s hand. Luana drives to Duvall and buys a handgun.
That evening the twelve adult neighbors gather in the McKinley parlor while the children are locked in an upstairs study. Ethan Wachowski and Django try to lower six-year-old Aurora down a dumbwaiter shaft for help, and she vanishes into the dark.
Kaila takes control of the ritual, pours red wine from the Accountant’s copper jug, and leads a toast to Levi. At ten o’clock the Accountant enters, dragging the mutilated corpse of Liam Wachowski.
Ralph and Luana confess that Ralph hit Liam with his car. Marc aims his gun at Ralph, and Luana shoots Joyce Wachowski in the face.
Gunfire and chaos follow as the Accountant expands into a towering black shadow and consumes the adults. Kaila reveals she has signed a deal as the Accountant’s successor and legacy.
Under her terms, her parents and the neighbors die in the parlor, while Django and the surviving children receive ordinary, uncursed lives with no memory of what happened.
Kaila picks up the leather briefcase, absorbs the entity’s power, and walks into the Snoqualmie Woods as the new Accountant.

Django dives in after him, and both are swarmed by pulpy hands of the dead before escaping.
