Nobody’s Quest Summary (Spoilers Ahead)
Warning: This section contains major spoilers for the entire book, including the ending.
Solitude “Soli” Grace works as an indentured servant in the Royal Library of Pyrrh at Pallanhold Keep.
She copes with trauma and what Altarran society calls “Gray Mind”—clinical depression—while secretly hoarding scraps of parchment and reading every book she cleans.
Guards drag Soli to King Pallan’s throne room, where Lady Elianna Lianonne has reinterpreted an ancient prophecy literally.
The Oracle declared that “nobody can touch the amulet” and “nobody can defeat Corvynne,” so Elianna convinces the king to test societal nobodies against the Amulet of Artemisen. The gem can unlock the imprisoned goddess Artemisen’s crystal tomb, but it incinerates anyone who touches it.
A young pig keeper named Lil touches the artifact and turns to ash.
When the guards prepare to force Soli’s friend Trick Jovann to touch it next, Soli steps forward and grabs the amulet herself. She remains unharmed, and the goddess Artemisen speaks through her to the court.
Artemisen warns that Altarra has until the summer solstice—the 100th anniversary of her imprisonment—to free her.
Two hidden keys must be recovered first: one in the Barrows and another in the Scholars’ Temple. King Pallan terminates Soli’s indenture and places her in a quest company led by exiled Prince Kaelen of Valourian.
The party includes Soli, Kaelen, Elianna, Trick, Sergeant Neville, young soldier Bern, the 160-year-old Sylvan lord Andras Al’Sylvan, and the desert warrior Chitai of Sharnon.
That night, Pallanhold Keep is ambushed by Zhagarn warriors and Fell beasts. The company escapes through secret tunnels.
On the road, Soli uses her library knowledge to navigate survival. She outsmarts a rival poisoner named Grigos by reciting botanical antidotes from memory.
Around the campfire, she explains her Gray Mind to her companions as a “giant serpent made of lies.” Prince Kaelen shows the massive scar across his chest and tells her that scars are the language of survival.
Elianna presents Soli with her official Certificate of Indenture Release, confirming her legal freedom. The sorcerer also confesses that she lost her advanced magic during a forbidden trial called “The Last Kiss of Breath.”
At the Barrows, the company faces ancient burial mounds built over giant spirits called draugrs. Soli remembers that singing soothes them. Bern sings a Pyrrhan lullaby, lulling twenty-pace-tall draugrs to sleep while Chitai retrieves the first golden key.
Trick impulsively grabs a massive ruby, waking the giants, and a collapse plunges Soli, Kaelen, and Bern into an underground river.
In a freezing cavern, Soli fights through a fog of Gray Mind to build a fire and keep her injured companions warm. She attaches the first key to the amulet, and Artemisen manifests to heal Bern and Kaelen. The goddess urges them onward to the Scholars’ Temple.

Reuniting with the company in Merrion, Soli and Kaelen walk through a burned field at night. The amulet channels Artemisen’s power through Soli, and the dead field blooms overnight with flowers and wheat. Soli and Kaelen make love at the inn, and he gifts her a silver-and-amethyst bracelet to cover her branded wrist.
In the Panterran Mountains, twelve bounty hunters ambush the company. Soli kills a hunter to save Andras’s life. Grateful, the Sylvan lord uses his ink tools to transform Soli’s burned “GM” brand into a crescent moon tattoo over mountains.
At the Temple of Knowledge, the company finds the sanctuary usurped by Darnen the Exiled, a fanatical rogue druid. He has spent fifty years trying to steal the second key from a lethal magical sphere that has killed three thousand people. Darnen kills Trick when the thief steps between him and Soli.
Overwhelmed by grief, Soli steps directly into the lethal sphere and grabs the second key.
The amulet’s holy fire burns Darnen and his Zhagarn minions to ashes. During the chaos, Kaelen’s royal heritage manifests—he shapeshifts into a giant Panterran snow leopard.
Artemisen manifests after Soli attaches the second key and reprimands her for using the sacred amulet to commit murder.
As a consequence, the goddess dissolves the second key. But Artemisen reveals a final reserve key hidden in Kaelen’s ancestral stronghold, the Valourian Keep. Using the second key’s energy, she opens the skies and winter snows fall across Altarra.
In the epilogue, a wounded wild snow leopard named Harper approaches Soli. He communicates telepathically, explaining that her Gray Mind creates a unique mental silence needed for the ancient snow leopard bond.
Soli heals Harper, accepts the bond, and rides toward Valourian Keep with Kaelen and her found family.
