Out of Her League Summary
Spoiler warning: this section covers the whole story, including the ending.
Isa is in the last year of a six-year residency in New York. She is the daughter of orthopedic pioneer Dr. Felix Mercado, and she wants the Winthrop Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship to prove herself on her own terms.
Austin, 37, is recovering from a career-ending ACL tear at the New York Lightning facility. He is also trying to keep the Mistry Foundation afloat, the Brooklyn youth sports charity he started with his late friend Theo.
At a dress fitting, Selena tells Isa that Blake is engaged to Francesca and will attend the wedding. Isa and Blake had an unspoken plan to reunite after their careers settled, and Blake moved on without telling her.
At the Met’s charity auction, Selena spends $1 million on a private training package with Austin to outbid Francesca. Afterward, Isa and Austin make a deal. He will pose as her boyfriend in France, and she will pitch wealthy guests on funding his foundation.
In Paris, the arrangement turns real quickly. At the Ritz welcome reception, Austin plays the attentive partner and leaves Blake stunned. When Isa is hit by grief over her past, Austin kisses her on the terrace to cover her reaction.
The wedding week includes a macaron class, a Mehndi ceremony at the Opéra Garnier, and a masquerade Sangeet at Versailles. At the Mehndi, Austin feeds Isa and wipes syrup from her lips in front of the guests. That night, they sleep together for the first time.
At Versailles, Blake accuses Isa of choosing her career over their relationship. She answers that he expected her to shrink her ambitions while he pursued his own. The exchange shows Isa she no longer wants him.
Austin meets venture capitalist Xander Sutton at the wedding. Xander offers to back a U.S. youth soccer academy.
Back in Manhattan, Austin cooks paella and looks after Isa when she comes down with RSV. He turns down coaching offers in London and Paris so he can build his academy in New York.

Then Dr. Felix Mercado arrives at Isa’s apartment after seeing a Voulez Magazine feature on her and Austin. He calls her unserious and reveals he phoned Dr. Charles Winthrop to get her an interview, since she was not a first-round candidate.
Shaken, Isa pushes Austin away when he comes for a date. She says the relationship was never serious and asks him to leave. Austin tells her she is scared because he will stand up to her ambition instead of asking her to shrink it.
Selena tells Isa that love is not what makes life hard. Isa travels to Boston for the interview, and in the hospital lobby she realizes she never wanted the fellowship. She wanted it to measure up to her father.
She turns down Winthrop and chooses a sports medicine fellowship under Dr. Reinhold. She reconciles with her mother, who says raising Isa was her greatest joy. Isa then meets Blake in Central Park and lets go of the remaining resentment.
To win Austin back, Isa sets up a gesture in Central Park with soccer balls, cones, and a revised copy of Soccer for Surgeons. She apologizes for running. Austin says he loves her drive and will never make her choose between work and love.
The epilogue is set two years later. Isa has finished her fellowship and become team surgeon for a championship basketball franchise in Manhattan. Austin’s Mistry Soccer Academy is running, and the couple is engaged and living together.

I’ll never make you choose, Isa.
No man is ever competing against some other guy for you. I’m competing with the life you’re building for yourself. Because unless I can add to it, I don’t deserve to be part of it.
Love isn’t hard. Life is hard. Love makes shouldering everything life will throw at you easier. If that’s not the case, then it isn’t love.
Turned out, I could have it all. Not one or the other. All of it.
