Rachel Howzell Hall’s The Cruel Dawn continues the Vallendor duology, following Kaivara “Kai” Megidrail as she fights to protect a rotting realm she once helped destroy.
The novel sets its second book inside the Aetherium, a cosmos of 70,000 created worlds ruled by five divine orders. Vallendor, the verdant realm, is now infested with mutated beasts and a plague called Miasma.
Kai must stop the traitor god Danar Rrivae while confronting her feelings for Jadon Wake Rrivae ā her lover and the living weapon built to destroy her.

The Cruel Dawn Summary: What Happens in the Story
Warning: Major spoilers ahead.
Kaivara Megidrail awakens in Doom Desert after her defeat at the Sea of Devour. Though Diminished, she still carries her sword Fury and the blade Justice.
A celestial bird called a daxinea guides her to Gasho, the capital of Kingdom Ohogar, which is under siege by Danar Rrivae’s mutated beasts.
Kai defends the civilians and reunites with Zephar Itikin, her former lover and second-in-command.
Together with his Mera contingent, she slays the beasts and restores Gasho’s aqueducts using her Eserime healing heritage. The Gashoans call her “Our Lady of Might and Life.”
Zephar urges Kai to destroy the corrupt city of Shelezadd. She refuses, stating her mission is now to protect Vallendor, not destroy it.
Kai consults Malik Sindire, the God of Leisure, who reveals Danar’s history: the Council authorized the destruction of Danar’s home realm, Birius, killing his wife and four children.
Sybel Fynal, Grand Steward of Vallendor, reveals she pledged her own divine grace to spare Kai’s life. Kai journeys to the Abbey of Mount Devour and meets her uncle, Agon Laserie the Kindness. Elyn Fynal suspends Kai’s death sentence so they can work together.

Using the Glass of Infinite Realms, Kai travels to Linione and faces her father, High Lord Izariel Megidrail. He warns that if she fails or joins Danar, the Council will wipe out Vallendor entirely.
Kai and Elyn learn they have only nine dawns before the full moon, Selenova, galvanizes Danar’s power. Kai confronts Jadon Wake Rrivae in the Abbey dungeons.
He confesses his love and his remorse for spreading Miasma. To defeat Danar, they need two relics: WISDOM, a gem inside the stolen Librum Esoterica, and TERROR, Danar’s dark amulet.
Danar appears to Kai in a vision and executes her friends Jamart and Lively to break her resolve. Kai vows to kill him. She travels to Caburh, where hostile humans call her “Maelstrom” and “Abomination.” Resurrected corpses called Voidful knock on the inn walls.
Kai orders the human rioters to evacuate Caburh within seven dawns so the Renrians can live in peace. She rides north with Philia Wysor and Separi Eleweg toward Brithellum.
They fight a burnu named Zigzag, and Kai heals Philia’s leg, draining her own fading energy.
Devourers ā giant living-dead Mera warriors ā ambush them. Elyn and Jadon arrive to help. Jadon tells Kai the only way to save Vallendor is to destroy him, since his presence drains her lifeforce.
In Beaminster, Prince Gileon Wake is rotting alive from Miasma. He grabs Philia at knifepoint, and Jadon stabs him to save her.
They retrieve the Librum Esoterica and rescue Olivia Corby. Back at the Abbey, Agon and Elyn extract Celedan Docci from the book and shatter the WISDOM gem. Celedan’s spent energy binds to Jadon’s linionium tattoo, spreading it up his arm.
A plague erupts inside the Abbey as Jadon’s tattoo radiates lethal energy. Agon orders him removed. Kai, Elyn, and Jadon flee down Mount Devour, where flora wilts with every step Jadon takes.
Kai seeks a cure from Malik Sindire. On the path, she kills Carana, a Mera warrior, in self-defense. Zephar arrives with his Diminished warriors, and tensions flare when he discovers Jadon hidden in the Sanctum.
Kai and Elyn uncover the Crusaders, a Mera supremacist faction led by Orewid Rolse. They seek to execute any god with mixed bloodline heritage, including Kai.
Malik reveals that TERROR is made of crystallized linionium. When Selenova peaks, the linionium will fully activate. If Jadon dies, it will transfer to Danar, making him invincible.
After a living-dead attack on Gasho, Prince Rewyn Idus is found dead. Kai overhears Zephar conspiring with the Crusaders. He calls her a “filthy abomination” and agrees to murder her and resurrect her as an undead pawn. Kai confronts him in the desert and cuts ties forever.
The forge-god Usese inspects Fury and explains it can never harm Danar because Jadon forged it.
Usese destroys Fury and forges a new linionium blade, which Kai names Cruel Dawn. Izariel gives her mother Lyra’s dagger, which she names Victory.
Jadon confronts Kai at the Rim of the Shadows, his tattoo now covering his chest and neck. He demands her moth amulet, snaps the chain, and kisses her, stealing her remaining divine breath. He leaves her to die on the desert rocks.
Kai is rescued by the daxinea bird and healed by Izariel and Sybel. Izariel restores her full status as Grand Defender, declaring that her empathy for mortals makes her the leader Vallendor needs.
At the Sea of Devour, Zephar and sixty Crusaders march to destroy Kai. Izariel and one hundred pure Mera warriors descend from Linione. Shari, the black wolf, defects to Kai and bites Zephar’s hand. Kai beheads Zephar with Cruel Dawn in an aerial duel.
Kai’s forces march into Doom Desert for the final battle. Emperor Syrus Wake rides out to demand surrender; Kai decapitates him with one blow. Jadon appears fully covered in linionium tattoos, wearing Kai’s amulet ā but he chooses love over self-preservation.
Danar summons his Devourers and flying resurrectors. Elyn reads the execution sentence. Jadon kneels before his father and severs his own right hand at the wrist, cutting off the linionium and his dark bond.
Enraged, Danar throws TERROR at Kai. Kai drives Cruel Dawn through his heart while Elyn drives Justice between his shoulder blades. Kai severs Danar’s head, and Mera fire incinerates his body.
In the aftermath, Eserime healers, Dindt builders, and Mera warriors rebuild Vallendor. Kai searches for Jadon’s body but finds only discarded armor and a broken chain. She assumes he is dead.
Twenty days later, Kai enforces her decree in Caburh and Gasho is rebuilt. She settles into Veril Bairnell’s cottage in Verilwood. On the twenty-first evening, a knock sounds at her door.
Jadon is alive, his right arm bandaged, his skin healthy, his eyes glowing with natural lavender light. Freed from Miasma and his father’s curse, he presents Kai with a brown cow named Clover.
They embrace and kiss ā waking to “a kiss instead of a kill.”
