Shadow Trials Summary: A Human Warrior in a Contest of Immortals

Fiona Thorne lives in Sylvantia, the one human kingdom that never bowed to the thirteen gods.

She fights with stolen divine tattoos and secret alchemy, and she answers to a father who refuses to let her join his order.

Then a god announces a tournament to replace his fallen champion, and Fiona signs her name in blood beside thirty-five immortal killers.

Shadow Trials by Evelyn Hart follows her through that contest in Dunloch, a mist-covered realm of poisonous trees and lethal court politics.

The novel is the first book in the Heartless Gods series and blends dark fantasy world-building with a slow-building romance between a mortal competitor and a prince who serves the Goddess of Death.

TL;DR: The Quick Briefing

  • The setup: A human warrior raised outside the gods’ Pact enters a four-stage tournament to become the Champion of Darkness and Secrets.
  • The cast: Godforged soldiers who resurrect after death, High Fae nobles, ancient dragons, and a brooding Champion of Death and Beauty named Azric Cyrus.
  • The engine: Survival trials, team politics, a hidden magical education, and a romance that builds slowly across the whole book.
  • The themes: Fate versus choice, sacrifice for duty, fabricated identity, endurance under torture, and connection as a counterweight to pragmatism.
  • The scale: A standalone-feeling contest plot that ends with a much larger threat arriving from outside the world.

Shadow Trials Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: this section describes the plot, including the ending.

Twenty-five-year-old Fiona Thorne breaks into the Crimson Tower in Averna to steal a god-touched relic for the Order of Priests. Azric Cyrus, the Prince of Bones and Champion of Death and Beauty, ambushes her inside.

His shadow magic nearly overwhelms her, but she leaps from a window and shadow-walks back to the border. The encounter leaves both of them marked by the other.

Back in Stormhaven, Fiona asks her adoptive father, Rhaskar Thorne, to induct her into the Order. He refuses and cites the Second Edict, which bars women from the Priesthood.

Countess Ainslee Emlyn then arrives with news that Queen Echo Vael has fallen in battle against Azric. Nyxthos, God of Darkness and Secrets, is opening the Shadow Trials in Dunloch to name her replacement.

Fiona volunteers. She travels by enchanted mirror to Draenyth with Ainslee’s twin brother, Darian Emlyn, a High Fae of the House of Light.

There she inscribes her name in the trial ledger in blood. She is the only competitor in Shadow Trials who is not Godforged.

At Castle Lachlan, thirty-five competitors gather under Nyxthos’s rules. Azric recognises Fiona from the heist and warns her privately that, as an unbound human, her kills are permanent, which makes her a target for every faction.

The first trial sends each competitor alone onto the Shadow Road. Fiona faces illusions of her mentors Bram Mercer and Cedric Penrose begging for death.

She recognises the test as one of fear, shoots the phantasms, and crawls through poisonous duskthorn to reach the finish. Her Mark of Chains carries her through.

The second trial binds competitors for interrogation. Corentin Maroux tortures Fiona and demands her secret word and the origin of her Priest Marks.

A shadow blade, secretly sent by Azric, weakens her bindings. She breaks free and kills Corentin permanently with a dagger through his eye and into his heart.

Nyxthos then grants a one-month grace period for the survivors to form teams of seven. Fiona joins Darian’s squad alongside Elara Vantrel, Isola, Jorren, and the Stormbringer brothers Erik and Rurik Halden.

The team pretends to be disorganised and hostile in public while drilling in secret. Fiona also trains at night on the dragon roost with Azric and the dragons.

During those sessions, a Shadow Road memory surfaces. She sees that Rhaskar murdered her birth parents when she was five and rewrote her memories so he could exploit her ability to sense god-touched objects.

She disowns him in her heart. The revelation reshapes how she reads every order she was ever given.

The third trial drops the teams into a dark wilderness to capture and hold a central tower for seventy-two hours. Fiona’s squad coordinates a defence against shadow demons, Abominations, and rival teams.

Darian steals the trial flag to draw enemy focus so his squad can win. He is killed in the attempt, and because of the circumstances of the phase, his death is permanent.

Only four finalists remain for the fourth trial: Fiona, Isola, Jorren, and Elara, who is murdered in the corridors beforehand. Before the maze begins, Saelira, Goddess of Destiny, tells Fiona she will die if she competes.

Fiona enters anyway, choosing Dunloch’s safety over her own life. Inside, Jorren reveals that her soul was bound at birth by Kaelith, the God of Lost Things.

When Jorren tries to force her off the path, she kills him in self-defence. Crippled and near collapse, she reaches the altar ruin, where Isola chooses to carry her forward.

Isola sacrifices herself so Fiona can touch the altar first. Fiona is declared the Champion of Darkness and Secrets.

At the ceremony, an enraged Nyxthos prepares to drag her into the Realm of Night for centuries of torture. The sky then rips open and four Hunters arrive in magic-draining crystal armour.

They surround the god, drive a broadsword into his chest, and kill him. The divine power holding Fiona’s shattered soul together begins to unravel immediately.

Azric shatters one of three glass beads made by Caeldra, relics capable of breaking destiny. Caeldra and the dragon Sidon intervene, and Sidon offers the crystal holding the soul of his dead mate, Vesper the Bright.

Azric carries Fiona to Rhaskar’s laboratory in Sylvantia. Rhaskar uses alchemy to fuse the dragon soul into her body, stabilising her spirit.

Evelyn Hart closes the novel with Fiona waking as the true Champion of Darkness, bound to Vesper the Bright and carrying powers no previous champion held.

Layers of Meaning in the Shadow Trials

The novel frames its central contest as a war game that the gods have run for eighty years, with soldiers resurrected a month after death.

Humans from Sylvantia sit outside that cycle, which makes every kill Fiona lands permanent. The tournament therefore doubles as a study of what a mortal can do inside a system built for immortals.

Political maneuvering replaces combat between trials, and most of the book’s tension sits in negotiation, feigned weakness, and information control rather than in open battle.
