The Bloody Brick Road Summary

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot, the twists, and the ending.

Dorothy Noroît is nineteen and twenty-three weeks pregnant in June 1994. She works at a mall jewelry store and hides a compulsive habit of buying high-heeled shoes.

In one afternoon, her boss fires her after her friend Bianca exposes the shoe spending. Her credit card is cancelled, and her boyfriend Vincent refuses to come home from James Bay.

Driving to a prenatal yoga class, Dorothy watches a red car swerve into traffic. The driver, Johanne Manseau, is talking on a car phone and dies instantly, her red stiletto heels thrown clear beneath Dorothy’s crushed car.

The pileup kills nine people and injures dozens. Dorothy’s placenta tears, and she is rushed to Sainte-Victorine Hospital.

Vincent ends the relationship by phone and tells her to let nature take its course. Dorothy delivers a boy by emergency C-section and names him Kansas.

Four other preemies share the NICU that night: Justin Manseau, Leopold Dion, Francis Carré-Croteau, and Maxime Legrand. Margaret Legrand, a wealthy fifty-two-year-old whose son Maxime is dying, swaps her infant with Dorothy’s healthier baby.

Two roommates, Linda Carré and Maryse Normandin, see the swap and say nothing. They assume Dorothy is too young and poor to raise a child.

Dorothy is told her son died at 2:17 a.m., thirty hours after birth. A hysterectomy leaves her permanently infertile. She walks out of the hospital barefoot with Johanne’s red heels in her bag.

By October 2019, Dorothy is forty-three and works as a documentation specialist at a natural history museum. Her shoe compulsion remains, and so does a decade-long attempt to adopt.

On October 2, the original due date of her lost baby, social worker Karine Maltais rejects her application. Maltais tells her she will never get him back and cannot replace one child with another.

Outside the hospital, the activist group Winged Monkeys protests against extreme preemie care. Dorothy runs into Linda Carré, who confesses the swap after twenty-five years of guilt.

Dorothy’s son did not die. Margaret Legrand raised him as Maxime, her miracle child. Linda later takes her own life.

Dorothy begins killing the survivors of that NICU night. The first is Francis Carré-Croteau, a twenty-four-year-old with cognitive disabilities who works at his family’s farm.

Teenagers trick Francis at an autumn party, tie him upside down to a pole, and funnel vodka into his rectum. Dorothy arrives afterward with a chainsaw and pitchfork.

She ties him like a scarecrow, opens his skull, removes his brain, and replaces it with a pair of human testicles. The press later calls him the Scarecrow.

The second victim is Leopold Dion, a twenty-five-year-old agoraphobic translator obsessed with an AI girlfriend named Aimee. Dorothy steals pepper spray from his mother Maryse, poses as a delivery driver, and enters his apartment.

She stabs him more than twenty times, castrates him, and cuts out his heart. His testicles go into Francis’s skull.

The third is Justin Manseau, a wheelchair-bound forest engineer with a facial scar and a deformed dog named Kalidah. He is the son of Johanne Manseau, the woman who caused the 1994 crash.

Dorothy enters his construction trailer, handcuffs him to his wheelchair, and opens his chest with a jigsaw. She removes his heart and nails Francis’s brain into the cavity before pushing him into a ravine.

Detective Lieutenant Henri Duhaime and Detective Sergeant Emilianne Saint-Gelais lead the investigation. They find that all three victims were preemies born at Sainte-Victorine on June 8 and 9, 1994.

Duhaime fixates on Maxime Legrand, a sociopathic master of disguise using aliases like Adrien Lalande, Hubert Dagenais, and Chanelle Ledoux. The detective hides his own shoe fetish and keeps evidence in a home safe.

Maxime, in truth, was severely abused as a child by Margaret Legrand, who beat him for imperfect recitations and appearances at her foundation events.

Dorothy tracks Maxime down, drugs him, and runs a DNA test that confirms he is her biological son. When he learns the truth, Kansas joins her.

Together they ambush Margaret Legrand in her dining room. They tie her to a chair, cut away her clothes, and pour bleach over her face.

Dorothy forces her to eat the carved-out heart of Justin Manseau, spoonful by spoonful, until she chokes. In the novel, Maude Royer has Dorothy threaten to cut open her belly and put it there herself.

They then find Vincent Boisvert, Dorothy’s ex-boyfriend and Kansas’s biological father. They break into his home, split his skull, remove his tongue and replace it with Margaret’s, and drain his blood.

Captain Bergevin dismisses Duhaime’s theory and blames activist Antoine Lebeau, whose DNA was on a cigarette butt Dorothy left at the farm. Lebeau is killed in prison.

Duhaime is suspended and descends into his own obsession, handling Johanne Manseau’s red heels in private.

Dorothy and Kansas escape under new identities. The book closes with an Amber Alert: a fifteen-month-old green-eyed boy has been taken from a sandbox.
