The Great Outdoors Summary: A Spoiler-Filled Walkthrough

Warning: Major spoilers ahead.

Sadie Whitlock, a 28-year-old corporate trainer from Austin, is dumped by her boyfriend Caden for being “too high-maintenance.” When Caden skips the expert-level Sierra Nevada backpacking trip they had planned together, Sadie decides to go alone.

She arrives at Summit Wilderness Expeditions with way too much luggage and a pair of white Adidas sneakers. Lead guide August “Thorn” Thorn is immediately skeptical of her readiness.

The group includes three tennis players from Pepperdine, three coffee company founders, and an engaged couple named Joshua and Zoe. On Day 1, Sadie’s shoes get muddy and her pack is too heavy.

Thorn makes a bet with her about blisters. That night, Sadie impresses him with her inflatable mattress and heating pad, and he leaves a note in her journal: “You can do this.”

On Day 2, Sadie nearly falls into a river at L’Heureux Falls, but Thorn catches her. That night, high winds tear her tent, and Thorn gives her his own.

By Day 3, Sadie catches six trout for the group’s dinner. Thorn opens up about his father’s health and his fallout with his former best friend Matteo.

On Day 4, Sadie’s kayak capsizes and Thorn rescues her. She also sees Instagram photos of Caden in Italy with another woman and realizes she is over him.

A storm hits that night, and Thorn ends up sharing Sadie’s tent after Joshua and Zoe have a massive fight. They cuddle for warmth.

On Day 5, Brittany falls on a steep switchback and badly sprains her ankle. The group carries her gear and reroutes for an emergency evacuation.

Day 6 brings a pivotal moment: Sadie leaves behind her makeup, perfume, and two books at a Little Free Library. Thorn secretly rescues her beloved coffee mug and pour-over setup from her discard pile.

On Day 7, Thorn shows Sadie a hidden cave behind Moonbow Falls, and they share a passionate kiss. Later, during rappelling, Sadie has a panic attack but pushes through with Thorn’s help.

Meanwhile, Matteo is caught making out with Zoe in the waterfall cave. Joshua discovers them, and Zoe admits she lost her ring days ago. Joshua takes off alone, and Matteo follows to keep him safe.

Now the sole guide, Thorn pulls away from Sadie to stay focused. On Day 8, she confronts him about his coldness, and he admits he is afraid of failing to protect everyone.

Day 9 is a mandatory silence day. Sadie journals and reflects on how much she has changed. Then she sees Zoe slip into the rapids at Sparrow Valley Falls.

Sadie grabs Zoe’s hand and Thorn arrives to pull them both to safety. That afternoon, Matteo calls via satellite phone—Joshua has quit and gone home, but Matteo is stranded.

Thorn hikes out alone through the dark to retrieve Matteo. On Day 10, six hikers attempt the summit of Mount Valerie at 9,872 feet, with Emma lending Sadie her hiking boots.

At the peak, Thorn and Sadie kiss. Sadie signs her name beside a signature left by Thorn and his father 19 years earlier.

Day 11 brings a final sunrise together at the lavender fields. They return to the trailhead, where Sadie’s shuttle whisks her away before they can properly say goodbye.

Two weeks later, Thorn appears at a restaurant in Austin wearing a suit. He has quit his job and taken a position in Texas.

He carves a tally mark into the table—a trail tradition—and tells Sadie he is ready for a new adventure with her. The epilogue takes place one year later in Switzerland at a five-star hotel, where Sadie and Thorn are newly married.
