North Country Summary: What Happens in the Book

Logan Landry is released on statutory release at thirty-eight, having served twenty years for his part in a botched youth robbery that left two OPP officers and his brother Jay dead.

His father, Holt, drives him back to Cold River, where he moves into a renovated studio apartment above the ranch’s detached garage.

His mother, Annie, greets him after two decades of writing him a letter every Sunday. His sister Sarah, her husband Jon, and their children also welcome him back to North Country Bison, the family’s 1,000-acre ranch.

On his first night home, three teenage girls trespass and throw a rock through his window. One of them is sixteen-year-old Isla McAllister, and the disturbance brings her mother Emery across the field.

Emery is now Staff Sergeant and OPP Detachment Commander. She and Logan have not seen each other since his conviction, and the connection between them is unchanged.

Logan adjusts to life outside: modern technology, exhausting ranch labor, and mandatory check-ins with his parole officer, Glen Howard.

Town elder Brad Whitley, whose police officer son Eric died in the robbery, pushes Emery and the police board to monitor Logan and drive him out of Cold River.

Sorting through boxes of Jay’s belongings, Emery and Logan find a hand-drawn map tucked inside a yellowed newspaper article about a 1990s armed jewelry heist. Logan, Emery, and Detective Terry dig up a stainless steel canister on a newly purchased parcel of ranch land.

Inside is half a million dollars in stolen diamonds and gold. The find leads to Hank Murphy’s arrest and long-term imprisonment for armed robbery and extortion.

When spring thaws the ice, Holly Monroe’s body is recovered from Lake Temagami. The autopsy shows a fatal skull fracture after intercourse, and the body had been weighed down underwater.

Detectives briefly suspect Logan’s cousin Jack Barrow, whose truck was seen in the tavern parking lot and who fished the lake with Logan the morning after Holly disappeared.

Emery recalls a rusted green car with a duct-taped bumper parked at the lake landing. The car belongs to Matt Danes, the popular owner of the Bale House Tavern.

Confronted with witness statements from Axel Murphy about chemical smells in his trunk, Matt confesses. Holly had struck her head on a metal dumpster behind the tavern during an argument, and Matt loaded her into his trunk, drove to Lake Temagami, and dumped her body in deep water from his boat.

Logan is fully exonerated. An earlier act of his — diving into the freezing lake to save a drowning elderly woman, Carol Roth — is reported in the local newspaper and shifts public perception.

Emery formally recuses herself from the case to protect her professional integrity, but her work on both the murder and the heist earns commendations from senior provincial officials, defeating Commander Freeman’s efforts to remove her.

Logan starts a formal mechanic apprenticeship on farm machinery. He and Emery tell their families and the community about their relationship and stand together openly.

In the closing pages, Logan visits his brother Jay’s grave with his mother and lays the guilt and grief of the past to rest, looking ahead to a future with Emery and Isla in Cold River.
