The story begins with Brightbill the goose returning to the island. He finds his mother, Roz, who now has a new, stronger body. Their reunion is cut short when a seagull warns them of danger.
A sick seal tells them a “poison tide” is coming. This tide burns animals and kills life in the water.
Soon, the poison tide surrounds the island. The water becomes dangerous. Kelp dies, and plants turn gray. Animals are forced inland, causing overcrowding and conflict.
A wildfire breaks out and adds to the crisis. Some geese abandon the island, but Roz stays to help.
During the chaos, Roz falls into the water. She discovers her new body is waterproof. That night, she tests herself by entering the toxic tide. The poison does not harm her.
She decides she must travel into the ocean to find the source of the poison and stop it. She says goodbye to Brightbill and enters the sea.
