Emery Mavestelli, a twenty-four-year-old executioner from the Mavestelli crime family, is brought into the program as his new partner.
Emery and Mori are locked in an isolation chamber together. The goal is to see if Mori can resist his compulsion to kill her. After a night of psychological sparring and physical tension, they are moved to The Under, a massive subterranean training facility.
Other cadets, especially Wraith and Arnold, immediately target them. Emery must rely on a man who has already promised that he will eventually be her end. The cadets then enter the Under Trials, a three-stage elimination process.
