Teresa is missing. A boy named Aris has been put in her place. He reveals he came from Group B, a parallel experiment involving girls. Shortly after, a WICKED official known as the Rat Man appears behind an invisible barrier.
The Rat Man explains that the Maze was only Phase One. The Gladers have all been deliberately infected with the Flare, a disease that drives humans into homicidal madness.
To earn a cure, they must travel 100 miles north across a wasteland called the Scorch and reach a safe haven within two weeks.
The group enters Phase Two through a Flat Trans portal.
It drops them into a pitch-black tunnel where molten silver spheres decapitate victims. Emerging into the Scorch, they find a world devastated by sun flares. The heat is so intense they wrap bedsheets around themselves as protective robes.

The surviving members of Groups A and B converge at the Safe Haven coordinates. They find only a barren stick in the ground. As the deadline expires, pods emerge from the earth and release bio-mechanical monsters covered in glowing orange bulbs.
A frantic battle breaks out during another massive lightning storm. The survivors discover that destroying the orange bulbs weakens the creatures.
They hide inside the monsters’ empty pods to survive the storm. A WICKED Berg arrives at the last second to retrieve them.
