Annie Carpenter is four months postpartum and caring for Lola, a baby with relentless colic. She is also managing Max’s seventeen-year-old twins, Jasmine and Jacob, who openly resent her.
The family lives in a gloomy Victorian house on Branford Road while builders Cameron and Jigsaw renovate it.
Annie suffers brain fog, nausea, and memory gaps.
A fire erupts while she naps during cooking, and all the house keys vanish from the door locks. Baby formula and prepared bottles disappear, wine appears half-empty, and Annie sees a dark figure in the garden at night.
Max attributes everything to “mummy mind” and pressures Annie to get psychiatric help. He hires Zoe, a young American nanny recommended by Cameron.
Meanwhile, Max argues secretly with his business partners Samantha and Sean about an $18 million company sale.
Annie wakes from a nap and finds her sister Samantha dead in the en-suite bathroom. Samantha is hanging from the towel radiator with the belt of Annie’s dressing gown around her neck. Max and Sean arrive, and the police are called.
An autopsy by DI Pitman reveals two sets of ligature marks on Samantha’s neck. She was strangled before being staged as a suicide. The pathologist also finds that Samantha was pregnant.

Cameron reveals that he and Zoe are Max’s illegitimate twin children from a 2001 one-night stand with Melody Hickman in San Francisco.

Jasmine deciphers Cameron’s dying mumbles as “great nord” and realizes Zoe is hiding at The Great Northern Hotel St Pancras. Annie and Jasmine search the hotel restrooms and rescue Lola from a locked disabled toilet.
Zoe escapes to France and Portugal under the alias “Jen Taylor” with the $1 million payout. Six months later, the Carpenter family has moved into a new home. Sean and Nisha are divorcing over the affair, and Jasmine and Jacob have fully accepted Annie.
A secret DNA test conducted by Annie reveals that Lola was fathered by an ex-boyfriend from the night before Max called her after their first meeting.
Seeing how deeply Max adores Lola, Annie destroys the test results and decides to keep the secret forever. She wants Lola to grow up in a secure, loving home with Max as her true father.
