When the Moon Hatched Summary: The Full Story
Spoilers below. The plot details the major events from beginning to end, including revelations.
The world of When the Moon Hatched was created by five gods. Dragons that die become moons. One god, Caelis, is trapped in a stone diadem to prevent catastrophic moonfalls.
The plot focuses on Raeve, an assassin for the Fíur du Ath rebellion. She poses as a traveling bard while secretly killing nobles who abuse children. Her commander, Sereme, controls her through a blood vial that inflicts pain.
Raeve’s mission to kill Lord Tarik Relaken goes as planned, but she is seen by Kaan Vaegor. Shortly after, the bounty hunter Rekk Zharos tracks her down. Rekk stabs her friend Essi, leaving her to die in Raeve’s arms.
Grief-stricken, Raeve loses consciousness. An alternate personality, “The Other,” takes over to hunt Rekk. The Other is captured, and Raeve wakes in prison. She is sentenced to the coliseum but escapes on a dragon named Rygun.
Rygun delivers Raeve to Kaan in The Burn. Kaan removes her restraints, but Raeve flees. She is captured by the Johkull Clan, who believe she is a prophesied figure. Kaan arrives during a deadly trial to claim her as his roskr and takes her to his capital, Dhomm.
In Dhomm, Kaan reveals Raeve is actually Elluin Neván, a princess who supposedly died over a century ago. Raeve does not remember this life. During a festival, she and Kaan grow closer, and Kaan shows her a hidden cavern.
Inside the cavern, Kaan has spent years piecing together the shattered stone body of her fallen dragon, Slátra. The sight triggers Raeve’s repressed memories. She finally remembers the truth of her past.
As Elluin, she loved Kaan. But King Ostern threatened to kill Kaan and his sister if Elluin did not bind with Tyroth. To protect Kaan, she lied and left him, hiding her pregnancy.
In the present, Rekk arrives in Dhomm with a tortured dragon. Raeve rescues the dragon and lets Rekk leave. Later, “The Other” captures and kills Rekk, burning his face to mirror the dragon’s pain.
Meanwhile, Kaan’s sister Veya discovers Elluin’s diary. She learns that Princess Kyzari, who hosts the Aether Stone, is actually Kaan and Elluin’s daughter.
The book ends with Arkyn, a rival king, kidnapping Kyzari to trap Kaan.
