King Randolph arrives in Anja’s workshop with a bloody confession.
He killed his wife to stop her from cutting out their daughter Snow’s heart. Now, his surviving daughter is confined to the desert villa of Witherleaf, suffering from erratic vomiting and wasting away.
Anja travels to the isolated villa with guards Javier and Aaron. She meets Madame Sorrel, the sharp-witted former mistress of the old king, and a one-eyed cat named Grayling.
Anja’s logical methods fail to find a physical poison in the food or cosmetics. The mystery pivots when she discovers Snow eating a strange, metallic “mirror-apple” hidden in the garden.
To understand the toxin, Anja eats a piece of the fruit herself. The substance causes violent nausea. Shortly after, she accidentally falls through her bedroom mirror into a terrifying place. It is a cold, gray, and empty duplicate of the real world.
There, the cat Grayling speaks. He explains the rules of this mirror-world. “Waking reflections” haunt the space. Worse, “mirror-gelds” exist—monstrous creatures formed from fragmented reflections shed when someone stands between two mirrors.
Anja brings guard Javier into the secret by feeding him a mirror-potato. Together, they explore the gray villa. They realize the true villain is the Mirror Queen, the awakened reflection of Snow’s dead mother.
The Queen has been manipulating Snow.
She tricks the grieving girl by claiming her dead sister, Rose, still lives inside the glass. The truth is darker. The Queen murdered the real Rose long ago and fed her heart to a reflection to create a short-lived fake.
The Queen’s ultimate plan is genocide. She wants reflections to consume the hearts of their real-world counterparts, allowing them to take over the physical world.
Anja and Javier are captured by the Queen’s armored guards in the mirror-world. They are imprisoned and face death by exposure. A massive, friendly mirror-geld they had treated with kindness earlier helps them escape.
They return to the real world just as Snow, having eaten five mirror-apples, enters the mirror-villa to fight the Queen. In the final confrontation, Snow and Anja use hand mirrors to trap the Queen in an infinite reflection loop.
Grayling trips the splintering Queen, causing her to fall through the glass into the real world. Without a consumed human heart to anchor her, the Queen dissolves instantly into gray dust.
Snow collapses, dying from the strain and the fruit’s poison. Anja takes a massive gamble. She injects Snow with an experimental distillate of chime-adder venom, a drug that forces the heart to beat fast and strong.
The procedure works. Snow survives.
