The story opens on the island of Korina after Elessia’s resurrection.

Sophia St. Germain sets the scene in a war-torn world divided between humans in Ellow,

Fae in Vastala, and a looming Oakgards’ armada. Lessia wakes with nosebleeds, exhaustion, and a new ability to hear the dead.

Her eyes glow gold and she summons hundreds of dead souls to separate the fighting factions.

To force unity, Dedrick Reinsdor proposes a political marriage between Loche and Iviry. Both leaders reluctantly agree. The witches Soria and Pellie explain that Lessia is a veiled queen, but her dual magic is killing her and Merrick.

Lessia’s group sails to Vastala to find a cure. Their ship is ambushed by loyalists; Cedar Reinsdor burns enemies with fire. Merrick executes an insubordinate commander.
