Anji Kills a King Summary: The Full Story

In Linura Castle, nineteen-year-old laundress Anji enters King Rolandrian’s private chambers and kills him with a letter opener.
She washes the blood away in the laundry room, collects her father’s coat, a dagger, two bronze coins, and silver Celdia, then escapes the capital hidden in a farmer’s turnip cart.
Days later, freezing on the northern tundra, she stops at a tavern called The Hammered Smith to win money at cards. A figure in black leather and a black metal bird mask enters and singles her out.
This is the Hawk, a member of the elite Menagerie bounty hunter cadre. She knocks Anji unconscious and drags her into the wilderness.
Anji wakes in iron manacles, her ankle bound by a maxial link that tethers her to the Hawk. The Hawk tells her she carries a one-million-Rhoda bounty and claims to have poisoned her, promising a weekly antidote in exchange for obedience.
The Lynx, a fellow Menagerie member in a jade cat mask, tracks them down. The Hawk breaks protocol, unmasks herself, and slits his throat with an arrow, taking his boots for Anji.
Trekking toward Silverton and Tumbledown Pass, they are intercepted by constables, whom the Hawk kills in seconds. In Silverton, Anji tries to escape on the Hawk’s horse and is jerked into the mud by the tether.
On the road they pass a Sun Warden wagon driven by Illuminess Hectate, alongside a purple-eyed Maxia named Alphoronse, displaying a caged Dredger.
Near the Kaskatian Mountains, a funnel storm and hail give way to thousands of carnivorous subterranean spiders that devour their horse, Molli.
Climbing Tumbledown Pass on foot, Anji notices the Hawk coughing black phlegm and catches her snorting a green vial of Rail. The drug explains the old warrior’s unnatural combat speed.
Their arguing triggers a snow slide that buries their supplies.
The noise wakes a Scorphice, a massive white chitinous monster, and the Hawk hands Anji a short sword.
Anji climbs the creature’s armored back and drives the blade into its eyes. They shelter in an abandoned storehouse, where the Hawk suffers violent Rail withdrawal and Anji sings the Menagerie rhyme and speaks of her aunt Belle, who secretly trained her in swordplay.
While foraging, Anji is ambushed by the Goat, who severs the maxial tether and slashes her face and shoulder. He drags her to the Ox, the Menagerie’s second-in-command.
When a man named Fernand demands Anji’s release, the Goat smashes a Rail vial against his chest and transforms into a horned berserker who slaughters the entire party. Anji is taken to Sheertop Cathedral, where the Menagerie’s leader, the Bear, waits in a white granite mask.
The Bear preaches the One Path, then forces Anji’s left hand onto an altar and severs two of her fingers. That night, while the Bear and the Goat are occupied near the altar, the Hawk enters through a broken window.
Outside, the Ox catches them. Anji ambushes her from behind and kills her with a stone sliver to the throat.
Anji and the Hawk ride to Kiva, where Jared, a former castle surgeon and old friend of the Hawk, treats Anji’s infected hand. He warns that the Hawk’s Rail addiction is pushing her toward transformation into a Dredger.
The Bear and the Goat find them at the inn.
The Bear seizes twelve-year-old Berip and slits the boy’s throat in front of Jared and Anji. The Hawk detonates a maxial flash vial, filling the room with light and orange smoke; the Goat dies convulsing outside and the Bear is mortally wounded.
At an abandoned coastal lighthouse, the Hawk teaches Anji a breathwork meditation for detaching from pain. She then confesses that six years earlier, working for Spur Fiacco, she murdered Anji’s parents for publishing The Tide, stuffing its pages into their throats, and later arranged Anji’s placement in the castle laundry.
She also admits the poison was a lie. She tracked Anji to claim the bounty, not for herself, but to fund the Tide’s uprising against the Senate and Sun Wardens.
They travel south to the port city of Tideron, where they witness High Cleric Escadora hang citizens accused of reformism and vagrancy. In a luxury bathhouse drug den run by Gina, leader of Spur Fiacco, a duel breaks out; Anji kills the henchman Devas and the Hawk kills Gina.
They take half a million Rhoda from Gina’s safe. At the docks, the Bear, still alive, confronts them, and the Hawk ends her with a dagger to the throat, finishing the Menagerie.
Sailing for Linura, the Hawk succumbs to sword wounds and Rail degeneration. She gives Anji the satchel of Rhoda, her father’s dagger, and both bronze coins, confirms her role in the murders, and asks forgiveness. Anji drives the dagger into her heart.
Anji puts on the Hawk’s black metal bird mask. At the Linura docks she poses as the Hawk, delivers the body of the “king killer” to Sun Warden authorities, and collects the bounty for the revolution.
In the epilogue, Evan Leikam shows Anji walking into the main camp of The Tide at the Everrun river bend, wearing her father’s coat and the Hawk’s mask, ready to lead.
