Introduction to The Impossible Fortune (Chapter-by-Chapter Summary)

What would you do with £350 million—if accessing it meant someone had to die?

That’s the question at the heart of Richard Osman’s The Impossible Fortune, the fifth installment in the Thursday Murder Club series.

The story opens during a wedding celebration, with Elizabeth pulled from her year of grieving by a desperate plea from the best man: someone has planted a bomb under his car, and he needs her help.

What follows weaves together digital currency, cold storage vaults, and the tangled histories of nineties drug dealers with the quiet rhythms of life at Coopers Chase.

Opening

The book opens with detailed instructions on how to manufacture or purchase bombs online.

The narrator explains that while bomb-making guides are plentiful online, it’s easier to use a website like “Boom or Bust” to custom-make an explosive for £27,000. Time is ticking for a planned assassination.

Part I: THURSDAY

Chapter 1: Wedding Preparations

Joyce describes her frantic preparations for her daughter Joanna’s wedding to Paul, a sociology professor. She recounts disagreements with Joanna over the wedding’s scale and the “London way” of doing things.

Despite the tension, they reconcile by remembering Joanna’s late father, Gerry. Joyce prepares for the ceremony at a country house in Sussex.

Chapter 2: The Best Man’s Secret

At the wedding reception, Elizabeth feels her senses reawakening after a year of grieving for Stephen.

The best man, Nick Silver, approaches her on the terrace and reveals someone tried to kill him that morning.

He claims to have proof on his phone. Nick asks for Elizabeth’s help specifically because of her reputation.

Chapter 3: Connie’s Mentee

Connie Johnson, a drug dealer and former inmate, sits in a vegan café mentoring a young girl named Tia Malone.

Ibrahim had suggested Connie mentor younger inmates to “pass on wisdom.” Tia proposes a plan to steal £100,000, but Connie encourages her to “dream bigger.”

They discuss moving from small robberies to robbing a warehouse for a million pounds.

Chapter 4: Ibrahim’s Dance

Ibrahim dances with the bride, Joanna, and they discuss her concerns about marrying Paul after only six months. Ibrahim offers sage advice: we ask for advice when we already know the answer.

He shares a brief, rare moment of vulnerability about his past love, Marius. Other guests approach Ibrahim for advice as the dance ends.

Chapter 5: The Car Bomb

Nick Silver shows Elizabeth photos of a professional car bomb attached to his Lexus.

He explains that he and his business partner, Holly Lewis, each hold a six-digit code to a vault containing something “very valuable.”

Nick names two suspects who know about the hidden item: Ravey Davey Noakes and Lord Townes. Elizabeth agrees to meet him the next day to learn the full story.

Chapter 6: Joyce’s Diary

Joyce writes about the “wonderful day” of the wedding, including her unconventional choice to walk Joanna down the aisle.

She expresses approval of Paul despite his “strange taste” in best men. Joyce mentions Elizabeth is being mysterious and has arranged a minibus trip to Fairhaven for the next morning.

Joyce’s dog, Alan, gets sick from eating wedding cake icing.

Part II: FRIDAY

Chapter 7: Suzi’s Stand

Danny Lloyd is confronted by his wife, Suzi, who points a Beretta at him. Suzi reveals fifteen years of being “beaten black and blue” and demands he leave forever.

Their son, Kendrick, witnesses the confrontation and asks if it’s a game. Suzi reveals she has sent a photo of her injuries to her brother, Jason Ritchie, who is on his way.

Chapter 8: The Minibus to Fairhaven

Elizabeth and Joyce take the minibus to Fairhaven to meet Nick Silver. Elizabeth admits she missed “trouble” and specifically missed working with Joyce.

They discuss Nick’s background—he and Paul met at university where Nick studied mathematics. The driver, Carlito, welcomes them back to investigative life.

Chapter 9: Ron’s Hangover

Ron Ritchie suffers a massive hangover on his bathroom floor after the wedding. Ibrahim and Ron’s girlfriend, Pauline, try to nurse him back to health.

Ron’s son Jason arrives with Kendrick, who is staying because “Danny’s left.” Ron forces himself up to play Lego with his grandson.

Chapter 10: The Empty Office

Elizabeth and Joyce arrive at Nick Silver’s office, “The Compound,” but find it locked. Joyce notices steam from a heating vent, suggesting someone is inside or was recently.

Elizabeth tries the lock with a file but fails. They decide to wait for the police rather than leave.

Chapter 11: The Warehouse Plan

Tia explains her detailed warehouse robbery plan to Connie, involving pallets and a vault. Connie gets distracted by a rude man on his phone and threatens him with a gun to make him use headphones.

Ibrahim arrives late for his session with Connie. Connie tells Tia to meet her at a lock-up on Tuesday.

Chapter 12: Donna’s Call

PC Donna De Freitas is stuck on security patrol for a visit from the Duke of Edinburgh. Elizabeth calls her to report a “break-in” at 8b Templar Street.

Donna is thrilled to hear Elizabeth’s old dismissive tone return. She agrees to attend the scene.

Chapter 13: Lord Townes’s Debt

Lord Robert Townes reflects on his collapsing estate, Headcorn Hall, and his mountain of debt. He recalls a visit from Holly Lewis and Nick Silver asking for financial advice.

Robert believes cashing in on their secret could reverse his family’s fortunes. He pours himself expensive whisky, hoping things are finally looking up.

Chapter 14: The Trashed Office

Donna, Bogdan, Elizabeth, and Joyce enter Nick’s office and find it violently trashed. Elizabeth finds a file tucked behind a radiator with her name on it.

Inside is a post-it note from Nick saying, “Help me, Elizabeth. You’ll work out how.” Elizabeth reveals the suspect list: Davey Noakes, Lord Townes, and Holly Lewis.

Part III: SATURDAY

Chapter 15: Ron Rallies

Ron lies on his sofa while Kendrick builds a Lego Death Star. Jason admits Suzi and Danny have split, but Ron suspects Jason is hiding the full truth.

Ron receives a message from Joyce about the break-in and Nick Silver’s possible death. Despite his aches, Ron rallies to meet Elizabeth in Fairhaven.

Chapter 16: Nick’s House

Elizabeth and Joyce search for Nick Silver’s house on Hampton Road. Ron joins them as Elizabeth climbs a gate to gain entry.

They find Nick’s Lexus in the driveway, but the car bomb Elizabeth saw in photos is gone. Elizabeth is confused—the house and car are correct, but the threat has vanished.

Chapter 17: The Honeymoon

Joanna and Paul are on an early honeymoon, attempting to climb an indoor wall.

Paul reveals he knew Joanna was lying about being an experienced climber. Joanna gets a message from Joyce asking for Holly Lewis’s phone number.

Paul provides the number but seems uncharacteristically unenthusiastic.

Chapter 18: Jasper the Bomb Expert

Elizabeth and Joyce visit “Jasper,” an old MI6 colleague and bomb expert who lives in a bungalow filled with porcelain cats.

Jasper confirms the photos of the car bomb are real, identifying it as a Russian-made explosive powerful enough to kill.

Elizabeth receives a call from Donna about “The Compound.” Joyce realizes Jasper is incredibly lonely and resolves to help him.

Chapter 19: Holly’s Dinner

Holly Lewis has dinner with the four members of the Thursday Murder Club at Coopers Chase.

She explains “cold storage”: physically locking up hard drives to keep them away from hackers.

Holly reveals she and Nick possess 5,000 Bitcoin worth £350 million, which they finally agreed to cash out. As she leaves the dinner, her car explodes in a massive fireball in the parking lot.

Chapter 20: The Fake Texts

Paul and Joanna are in a hot tub when Paul receives a series of suspicious texts from “Nick.”

Paul realizes the messages are fake because the sender uses the name “Paul” instead of “Paolo” and doesn’t know the name of Paul’s first car.

They conclude someone has stolen Nick’s phone and likely kidnapped him. Joanna decides they must show the messages to Elizabeth.

Chapter 21: The Aftermath

The club watches as police examine the wreckage of Holly’s car. Elizabeth has already secretly retrieved Holly’s SIM card from the debris.

DCI Varma interrogates them, but they provide no useful information. Ron tells Kendrick the explosion was a “bomb from the war.” Ron vows to investigate the Ritchie family’s own troubles alongside the murder.

Chapter 22: Davey Noakes

Ron and Bogdan visit Davey Noakes at his luxury home. Davey reveals that he was the original source of the Bitcoin, having paid Nick and Holly twenty years ago.

He denies killing Holly, claiming he has known about the money for two decades and would have stolen it long ago if he wanted to.

He suggests the club look into Lord Townes or wonder if Nick Silver is really dead.

Chapter 23: Paul’s Concern

Joanna and Paul return from their shortened honeymoon to meet the club. Paul admits he is more worried about Nick than distraught over Holly’s death.

Joanna reflects on how her mother’s life is now filled with “spies and drug dealers.” Paul expresses his deep love for Joanna, stating the situation would be unbearable without her. They arrive at Coopers Chase.

Chapter 24: Danny’s Plan

Danny Lloyd is in Portugal, meeting with lawyers and planning the murders of Suzi and Jason Ritchie.

He believes Suzi’s will still leaves everything to him and plans to hire a hitman to stage an “accident.”

He feels confident that Jason has enough enemies that his death won’t be traced to Danny. He intends to return to England with a perfect alibi once they are dead.

Chapter 25: Joyce’s Flat

The gang meets at Joyce’s flat to review the fake texts sent to Paul. Joanna and Elizabeth have a brief power struggle, with Joanna demanding Elizabeth show her husband more respect.

Elizabeth decides to have Holly’s SIM card analyzed in London. Ibrahim feels a sense of loneliness as the others pair off for their various tasks.

Chapter 26: Jasper’s Analysis

Elizabeth and Joyce return to Jasper’s house in Purley to analyze Holly’s SIM card. Jasper discovers Holly attempted to make a phone call at 9:44 PM, just one minute before the explosion.

Elizabeth calls a contact to trace the number, which belongs to a “Jill Usher” in Manchester. Joyce insists on helping Jasper pack up his hated porcelain cats before they leave.

Chapter 27: The Real Compound

Davey Noakes visits the real “Compound,” an underground vault formerly used by miners.

He reflects on how he switched from computers to physical notebooks twenty years ago for better security. He recalls how he paid Nick and Holly in Bitcoin as a “fun gamble.”

Davey enters the vault with the guard, Bill Benson, noting he had a lucky phone call after his last meeting with Holly.

Chapter 28: Assigning Tasks

The gang has dinner at Ron’s flat with Kendrick.

Elizabeth assigns tasks: Ron is to track down Bill Benson, a former miner connected to The Compound. Elizabeth and Joyce plan to travel to Manchester to find Jill Usher.

Kendrick listens to the adults and remarks that something valuable must be hidden underground. Elizabeth shares a moment of bond with Kendrick over a locket of Stephen.

Part IV: SUNDAY

Chapter 29: The Manchester Trip

Joyce prepares for the Manchester trip, with Elizabeth using a cover story that they are “genealogical researchers.”

She worries about the concluded fake texts from Nick and what they imply. Ron plans to find Bill Benson at a pub. Joyce reflects on the growing closeness between Kendrick and Alan.

Elizabeth falls asleep on the train with her head on Joyce’s shoulder.

Chapter 30: Bill Benson

Ron finds Bill Benson at “The Dove” pub and they bond over their shared history on the 1974 picket lines. Ron reveals that Holly Lewis is dead and Nick Silver is missing.

Bill is horrified, having been unaware of Holly’s murder. He agrees to trust Ron and take him to the secret entrance of The Compound.

Chapter 31: Jill Usher

Joyce and Elizabeth interview Jill Usher in Manchester using their “Heir Hunter” cover story. Jill reveals she once worked in Brighton but knows nothing about Holly Lewis.

Jill’s husband, Jamie, arrives and is immediately suspicious of the two women. He warns them that if it is a scam, they will regret it.

Chapter 32: The Secret Entrance

Bill Benson leads Ron to a Ministry of Defence lodge where the secret entrance to The Compound is located. In the cellar, Ron notices high-end security cameras and a suspicious-looking washing machine.

Bill explains that the vault is incredibly secure, requiring retinal and thumbprint scans from both a guard and a client. He reveals that Lord Townes has an appointment to visit the vault on Wednesday.

Chapter 33: Connie’s Yoga

Connie Johnson and Ibrahim do yoga together. Ibrahim asks Connie for a favor: information on Davey Noakes. Connie describes Davey as a “textbook drug dealer” and a pioneer in the industry

. Ibrahim asks if Connie is a client of The Compound; she agrees to help him get inside if he watches an episode of Below Deck with her.

Chapter 34: Chris and Donna

Donna tells Chris she is looking into Jill Usher on Elizabeth’s behalf. Chris tries to maintain his distance from the Thursday Murder Club but admits to solving eight murders that year without their “interference.” Donna challenges him, suggesting he misses them.

Chris accidentally reveals he came in twelfth in firearms training after “shooting a mum pushing a pram” in a simulation.

Chapter 35: Lord Townes’s Estate

Elizabeth and Joyce visit Lord Townes at his decaying estate. Lord Townes (Robert) claims he was only advising Holly and Nick on City banking connections.

He denies killing Holly and points the finger at Davey Noakes or Nick Silver. Joyce and Elizabeth realize he is lying when he says he has no plans to visit The Compound soon.

Chapter 36: The Hitman

Danny Lloyd meets a hitman on a beach in Portugal to finalize the hits on Jason and Suzi. He pays £20,000 upfront, with another £20,000 due on Wednesday after the job is “quick and clean.”

Danny plans to fly home Wednesday evening with a perfect alibi. He looks forward to leaving his son with Ron and “seeing the world.”

Chapter 37: The Hot Tub

The club meets in a hot tub at Coopers Chase. They debate whether Nick Silver killed Holly or if they are both victims. Ibrahim reports he has emailed 400 solicitors to find the one holding the Bitcoin codes.

Ron is distracted by his worries about Suzi and Jason but refuses to share them with the group yet.

Chapter 38: Townes’s Decision

Lord Townes reflects on his mediocre life and his father’s cruel motto: “Kill or be Killed.” He feels he has outlived his luck and must take charge of his financial situation.

He calls The Compound to confirm his Wednesday morning appointment. He decides to follow his father’s advice and “step forward” into control.

Chapter 39: Joyce’s Certainty

Joyce and Ibrahim spend Monday evening watching TV quizzes. Joyce is convinced Davey Noakes is the killer because he is the most obvious candidate.

Ibrahim warns her not to rule out Lord Townes or Nick Silver. Joyce compares her certainty about the killer to her correctly guessing the flag of Venezuela on University Challenge.

Chapter 40: Paul’s Past

Joanna and Paul have a post-theatre supper and Joanna confronts him about his past with Holly. Paul admits they dated for eighteen months in their forties and that she was a “challenging” person.

Joanna assures him she doesn’t care about his past but warns that the police will be interested. Paul asks if she has any guesses for Holly’s six-digit code.

Chapter 41: The Kettering Solicitor

Jeremy Jenkins, a solicitor in Kettering, reviews a file for Holly Lewis. The file contains two envelopes to be opened in the event of Holly’s or Nick’s death.

He has been trying to call Nick Silver with no success. The file contains a third number to call if both are “indisposed”—a number belonging to Paul Brett.

Part V: TUESDAY

Chapter 42: Donna’s Discovery

Donna does some digging and discovers that “Jill Usher” isn’t who Holly was ringing—it was her husband, Jamie Usher. Jamie has a history of multiple fraud convictions.

Elizabeth is annoyed she missed the connection but praises Donna’s progress. Ron and Bogdan lie to Donna, saying they were “bowling” on Saturday morning.

Chapter 43: Tia’s Robbery

Tia executes the warehouse robbery, successfully smuggling guns past a guard. The robbery goes well until the truck’s remote security protocol disables the vehicle and fills the cab with red smoke.

Tia shoots her way out of the windshield and flees into the South Downs. Connie picks her up in a Tesla and tells her she needs to hide for a few days.

Chapter 44: Jamie Runs

Jamie Usher arrives home to see police at his house and realizes they are there for him. He assumes it’s about his illegal mortgages but suspects the two old women who visited Jill.

He decides to run and heads south toward Kent. He carries Elizabeth Best’s business card with him.

Chapter 45: Ibrahim’s Hideout

Connie brings Tia to Ibrahim’s flat to hide from the police. Ibrahim is initially resistant until he sees Tia’s gun and realizes the gravity of the robbery. He is deeply saddened that Connie “continued the cycle” by involving Tia in crime. Connie breaks down in tears and apologizes to Tia. Ibrahim agrees to hide and help the girl.

Chapter 46: The Hit on Jason

Jason Ritchie protects Kendrick while Suzi stays with friends to recover from her injuries. An “Amazon” delivery driver rings the doorbell, but Jason’s instincts warn him it’s a hitman.

Jason scoops up Kendrick and dives out the back window just as bullets fly through the front door. Danny Lloyd has made his move.

Chapter 47: Safe House

Jason, Ron, and Kendrick flee to Ibrahim’s building for safety. Kendrick meets Connie and Tia, sensing the adults are all frightened. Tia and Kendrick bond over a shared love for the TV show Friends and Sprite.

Kendrick wonders if his job is now to keep his family safe.

Chapter 48: Donna Interviews Paul

Donna interviews Paul Brett in London, with Joanna acting as his “lawyer.” Joanna reveals the quarter-billion-pound Bitcoin fortune to Donna in exchange for a favor.

Donna agrees to give Paul access to The Compound’s impounded CCTV footage. Donna receives a call about the attempt on Jason Ritchie’s life and rushes to work.

Chapter 49: No Grassing

Chris and Donna visit Ron’s flat to investigate the shooting, but the Ritchies refuse to “grass.” Kendrick listens from the next room and feels proud of his grandad’s strength.

However, he begins to feel that there are “worse crimes than grassing.” Chris warns Ron that if he gets killed, Elizabeth will be on the phone.

Chapter 50: Elizabeth’s Grief

Bogdan helps Elizabeth with her underfloor heating and they discuss her grief over Stephen. Elizabeth describes grief as something no one can truly understand until they experience it.

Ron texts Bogdan for help, specifically telling him “No Elizabeth.” Elizabeth refuses to be left behind and insists on going with him.

Chapter 51: The Summit

Ron, Jason, and Bogdan hold a summit to discuss killing Danny Lloyd. Elizabeth arrives and, to their surprise, does not dissuade them, but tells them to “do the right thing.”

She only asks that Ron and Bogdan look out for each other and not get arrested. Connie Johnson arrives and asks to join their “gang” for revenge.

Chapter 52: Paul’s Inheritance

Joanna is selling Paul’s old flat when she receives a call from Jeremy Jenkins, the Kettering solicitor. Jenkins reveals he has been trying to reach Nick Silver regarding Holly’s death.

He informs Joanna that if Nick is also deceased, the Bitcoin codes become the property of her husband, Paul Brett.

Part VI: WEDNESDAY

Chapter 53: Jamie’s Confession

Jamie Usher visits Elizabeth and Bogdan, terrified that the police were at his house because of a “car bomb.” Elizabeth reveals that Holly Lewis called his number right before she died.

They realize Holly wasn’t calling a person, but was “writing down” her code—the digits of the phone number itself.

Chapter 54: Townes in the Vault

Bill Benson escorts Lord Townes into the vault at The Compound. Townes enters safe 816 and retrieves a small wooden box.

Bill notes that Davey Noakes also visited on Saturday but he hasn’t told Ron yet. Townes appears much calmer once he has the box.

Chapter 55: The Two Codes

The club gathers at Ibrahim’s with Kendrick and Tia. Elizabeth announces she has Holly’s code: 416617.

Ibrahim and Kendrick realize that Nick’s fake texts also contain a code: 217495, hidden as the first digits of the second words of his messages. They now have both halves of the Bitcoin code.

Chapter 56: Joyce’s New Purpose

Joyce reflects on being a “spare wheel” in the investigation. She notes that Elizabeth is questioning her son-in-law behind her back.

Joyce decides that since she can’t be an MI6 agent, she will focus on helping the living, like Jasper. She orders a nice tea set for him online.

Chapter 57: The Children’s Discovery

Ibrahim serves hot chocolate to Kendrick and Tia. Tia and Kendrick read the fake texts and are the first to spot the hidden code that the adults missed. Tia concludes that Nick Silver is alive and trying to send a message.

Chapter 58: The Code Cracked

The gang reviews the texts, and Kendrick highlights the hidden numbers: 2, 1, 7, 4, 9, 5. Elizabeth is impressed that the children spotted what she did not. They realize they have everything needed to open the safe.

Part VII: THE FOLLOWING THURSDAY

Chapter 59: Danny Returns

Danny Lloyd flies back to the UK from Portugal, furious that the hit on Jason failed. He resolves to kill Jason himself. He is distracted by a “more exciting” prospect that has come up.

Chapter 60: Into the Vault

Ron and Connie descend into the vault in a small metal cage. They discuss their mutual respect for Ibrahim and whether Connie would have actually killed Ron in the past.

Ron is determined to get the “scrap of paper” to prove he can still protect his family.

Chapter 61: The CCTV Footage

Joanna watches The Compound’s CCTV footage while on a long business call. She sees footage from her wedding day showing Holly Lewis meeting Davey Noakes alone at the facility.

She realizes this makes Davey a prime suspect again.

Chapter 62: The Safe Opens

Ron, Connie, and Bill Benson stand before the safe. Ron’s fingers are shaking due to a physical decline he has been hiding, and Connie enters the codes for him.

They try Nick’s code followed by Holly’s, and the safe springs open, revealing the paper key.

Chapter 63: The Wait

Joyce waits on the clifftop with the others. Ibrahim receives a message from Ron saying the mission was successful. However, Ron and Connie have disappeared and haven’t returned to the group.

Chapter 64: Davey’s House

Joanna calls Joyce and reveals that Davey and Holly met on the wedding day. They watch today’s CCTV and see Ron and Connie embrace and then set off in different directions.

Joanna, Paul, and Joyce decide to go to Davey Noakes’s house immediately.

Chapter 65: Davey’s Confession

The gang confronts Davey Noakes at his home. Davey admits he met Holly and that she confessed to planting the bomb under Nick’s car. He claims he removed the bomb to save Nick and later returned it to Holly’s car with a note to “Play fair.”

Chapter 66: The Trap

Ron sits in the dark at Pauline’s flat, knowing he was followed. Danny Lloyd picks the lock and enters with a gun.

Chapter 67: Holly’s Death Explained

Davey Noakes continues his story, explaining that Holly was killed by her own bomb when she dumped her heavy bag on it. He claims Nick Silver is likely in “cold storage”—hiding in a faceless hotel to escape him.

Chapter 68: Varma’s Kiln

DCI Varma is shown failing to solve the murder and becoming more interested in buying a second-hand kiln for her pottery. She considers Lord Townes as a suspect because he has been boasting about Bitcoin.

Chapter 69: The Worthless Key

Davey reveals the ultimate “bad news”: the Bitcoin in the safe was a scam. He swapped the real key for a piece of random numbers years ago and cashed out the real money himself. The paper Ron just retrieved is worthless.

Chapter 70: Danny’s Arrest

In the final confrontation, Danny Lloyd demands the Bitcoin from Ron. Ron tricks Danny into calling his hitman on speakerphone to “call off the hit,” which serves as a confession.

Armed police, including Chris Hudson, storm the room and arrest Danny. Ron reflects that Kendrick was the one who convinced him to “grass.”

Part VIII: THE NEXT SIX WEEKS…

Chapter 71: Townes’s Choice

Lord Townes is on a boat in the English Channel, having taken his father’s gun to commit suicide due to his ruin. He reflects on his “charmed but unloved” life.

As he prepares to pull the trigger, he sees a metaphorical “galleon” of hope in the distance.

Chapter 72: Ibrahim Loved

Ron and Ibrahim share a quiet moment, and Ron tells Ibrahim he is loved.

Ron reveals Connie helped because she wanted Ibrahim to be proud of her. They argue about who the best James Bond is.

Chapter 73: Tia’s New Start

Elizabeth introduces Tia to an old contact for an “irregular,” off-the-books job training opportunity. Tia is offered a fresh start away from her criminal past.

Chapter 74: Joyce’s Tea Set

Joyce receives the wedding photos and deletes those featuring people in the same hat as her. She reflects on the true story being about the “quiet corners”—Ron’s bravery and Suzi’s strength.

She heads to Purley to bring Jasper a teapot and milk.

Chapter 75: No More Lies

Paul tells Joanna he spoke to the solicitor about the envelopes and that they are safe.

They promise “no more lies” to each other. Joanna lies one last time to avoid seeing Mumford & Sons.

Chapter 76: Nick Emerges

Nick Silver is revealed to be hiding in a roadside Travelodge. He hears a secret signal from Paul on the radio (“The Key: The Secret”) and finally calls him.

Paul tells him Holly is dead and that he has “good news and bad news” regarding the money.
