TL;DR: When a Quiet Estate Stops Being Quiet
Dr. Cara Tucker arrives in rural Missouri expecting a semester of quiet research.

She finds squad cars and an ambulance instead. Natalie has just suffered a dizzy spell and a fall, and Sheriff Brad Mitchell asks Cara to keep an eye on her.

Out of Time Summary: The Full Story
Spoiler warning: the following section covers the plot, the culprit, and the ending.
Cara Tucker settles into a daily routine at the Boyer estate, translating the journals of Natalie’s late aunt, Marie Boyer, every morning.
Around her is a small cast of regulars: Micah Reeves, a war veteran with a brain injury who lives in a cabin and nurses injured wildlife; Lydia Foster, the housekeeper; Paul Coleman, a historical society volunteer; and Steven Boyer, Natalie’s charming cousin from St. Louis.
Strange events accumulate. Natalie suffers a second dizzy spell with no medical explanation. A potholder catches fire in her kitchen trash, and she insists she never put it there.
Cara spots lights moving through the woods near the lake at night. Lydia, buried in debt and desperate to escape her brother Randy, steals a rare stamp from Natalie’s desk.
Paul Coleman eventually confesses to burning the potholder himself. He wanted Natalie to move the journals off the estate, fearing they might expose an affair between his grandfather and Marie Boyer that could damage his son’s congressional campaign. Natalie forgives him and promises discretion.
Then Cara finds Micah Reeves’s body submerged beneath a boat in the lake. The coroner leans toward an accidental fall, but Brad Mitchell is not convinced.
Meanwhile, Brad and Cara begin to confide in each other. Brad lost his wife Elizabeth and four-year-old son Jonathan in a foggy car crash three years earlier and has carried the guilt since. Cara describes losing her hearing to measles at three, her years in foster care, and her adoption into the Tucker family.

The truth centers on Steven Boyer. Deep in debt and facing foreclosure, he found letters from his late father describing stolen German art and jewels hidden in the estate’s limestone caves. He had been slipping onto the property at night to search the passages.
When Micah noticed his nocturnal trips, Steven killed him with a blow to the head and dumped the body. He had also been spiking Natalie’s evening wine with Ambien to make her doubt her own memory.
DNA testing on a bloodstained paper towel from Micah’s boat points toward Steven’s bloodline. Sensing the net closing, Steven retrieves a canvas bag of jewels from a rock crevice in the cave.
On his way out he runs into Cara on the forest path and drops a diamond-and-emerald bracelet.
Steven draws a handgun and forces Cara up the trail toward the estate’s high rocky cliff, planning to stage her death as a fall like Marie Boyer’s suicide. Cara stalls him with questions and gets him to admit he killed Micah.
Brad, who had realized Cara was missing, reaches the cliff path on foot and orders Steven to freeze. Cara strikes Steven’s face, breaking his grip, and he loses his footing and falls to his death.
Brad searches Steven’s guest room and finds cave maps, a headlamp, a list of stolen art, and two hidden canvases: a Vermeer and a Rembrandt. The FBI Art Crime Team is called in to return the paintings to their rightful owners in Germany.
An appraisal then reveals that the jewels Steven killed for were worthless glass paste. Seven months later, Cara presents her completed research on Old Mines culture and Paw Paw French at a university lecture, publicly thanking Natalie.
Lydia returns the stolen stamp with an apology letter.
After the lecture, Brad drives Cara to a nearby town and reveals he is retiring as sheriff to become chief of police there, putting him close to Cape Girardeau. He proposes with a diamond ring, and Cara accepts.
