Silent Bones Summary: Val McDermid’s Cold Case Thriller
Silent Bones by Val McDermid: A Cold Case Buried Under Concrete
A mudslide on Scotland’s M73 motorway tears open a road surface laid down in 2014 and exposes a human skull.
Miles away in Edinburgh, a man from New Zealand walks into a small police unit with CCTV images he believes prove his brother was murdered.
Silent Bones is the eighth novel in Val McDermid’s Karen Pirie series. It follows the Historic Cases Unit as two unrelated discoveries pull the team into a decade-old network of privilege, political ambition, and buried violence.
The story moves between Edinburgh’s Old Town, the Crime Campus at Gartcosh, Glasgow’s riverside wealth, and the Highland roads of Inverness-shire.
McDermid sets the investigation against the aftermath of Scotland’s 2014 independence campaign, where powerful figures used money and connections to control what the public learned.
TL;DR: What You Need to Know
- Two cases, one root: A skeleton under the M73 and a staged fall on the Scotsman Steps both trace back to a single night of violence in 2013.
- The team: DCI Karen Pirie’s Historic Cases Unit works cold disappearances, missing persons, and cases the rest of Police Scotland has written off.
- The antagonists: A titled political insider, a famous comedian, and a corporate executive protect themselves with status and silence.
- The core tension: Uncovering the truth does not guarantee a courtroom conviction.
- Recurring ideas: Entitlement, institutional limits, grief, and the loyalty of a small team that works forgotten cases.

The Discovery in Spring 2025
Torrential rain causes a bank collapse on the M73 near Gartcosh. A skull is found embedded in road substrate poured during construction in early 2014.
DCI Karen Pirie runs the Historic Cases Unit from Gayfield Square in Edinburgh. Forensic anthropologist Dr. River Wilde recovers the remains and confirms a DNA match with Sam Nimmo.
Nimmo was a 33-year-old freelance investigative journalist who vanished in 2014. At the time, police assumed he had killed his pregnant fiancée, lawyer Rachel Morrison, and fled abroad.
In the same week, Drew Jamieson arrives from Nelson, New Zealand. He insists his brother Tom, general manager of the Scott Monument Hotel, did not fall down the Scotsman Steps by accident in March 2020.
Drew’s CCTV stills show a hooded figure following Tom out of the hotel. A reverse-image search identifies the man as Marcus Nicol, head of the medical equipment firm Surinco.
Karen and DS Daisy Mortimer question Nicol. He denies everything.
Sam Nimmo’s Last Investigation
DC Jason Murray, known as “The Mint”, contacts Sam’s mother Janet and his sister Dr. Jess Nimmo. The family had spent eleven years branded by the belief that Sam was a killer.
Jess clears out Sam’s untouched childhood bedroom and finds his Teeline shorthand notebook from the day he died. Retired instructor Ella Gorrie transcribes the notes, which name Fraoch House, the initials HSD and BtK, and a woman called Chloe.
Karen learns Sam had been chasing a rumour of a sexual assault at a Yes campaign fundraiser. The trail leads to Haig Striven-Douglass, now Lord Friockheim, and Billy the Kidd.
The Justified Sinners
Daisy discovers that Tom Jamieson had quit his football team shortly before his death to join a private twelve-member book club. The group calls itself the Justified Sinners, after James Hogg’s 1824 novel.
Tom filled a vacancy left by architect Bryce Gordon, who died in late 2019 when his Jaguar left a Highland road. Gordon’s widow Victoria and son Gavin never accepted the accidental-death ruling.
Helmet-camera footage from two cyclists shows a Mercedes SUV tailgating Gordon’s car before the crash. The vehicle belongs to Heidi Nicol, Marcus Nicol’s wife, and was sold two days after the crash — before the body was found.
A stakeout at 8 Upper Dean Terrace identifies the twelve members, among them Marcus Nicol, host Hugh Grieve, and Lord Friockheim.
Marcus Nicol’s Arrest
Karen and Jason arrest Nicol for Bryce Gordon’s murder. Paint transfer, the rushed sale, and testimony from Hugh Grieve trap him.
Grieve admits Nicol had wanted entry into the group, was passed over when Gordon died, and killed again to secure a place.
The Sting in Glasgow
Karen and Daisy travel to Rostock, Germany, to meet Linda Lawrence, Sam Nimmo’s former photojournalist partner. Linda confirms the 2013 assault on Chloe Grange, now working as Claudia Grainger.
Billy the Kidd has lived in San Francisco since 2014. Comedy promoter Folasade Cusack lures him back with a secret surprise appearance at the SSE Hydro.
He is arrested as he steps off stage.
What Happened to Rachel
Forensic technicians match a fingerprint under Rachel Morrison’s bathroom sink to Claudia Grainger. Karen confronts her at home and Claudia confesses.
In March 2014 she went to Rachel’s flat to beg her to stop Sam’s investigation. Rachel refused and reached for her phone; Claudia lunged, and Rachel fell against the marble fire surround and died instantly.
Claudia called Billy, who cleaned the flat and drove her home.
Billy’s Confession
Under interrogation, Billy describes the same night. Sam Nimmo confronted him at gunpoint demanding to know who killed Rachel.
Billy summoned Haig. Haig struck Sam with a bronze trophy, then ordered Billy to dispose of the body.
Billy buried Sam in the active M73 construction trench and sent fake texts from Sam’s phone to frame him as a fugitive.
The Ending
Marcus Nicol is charged with murder and dangerous driving in Bryce Gordon’s death. The match-fixing ring uncovered through Sam’s football contacts is also prosecuted.
The Lord Advocate declines to prosecute Haig, Billy, or Claudia for murder or rape. Evidentiary thresholds, expired statutory limits, and the wish to avoid further trauma to Claudia all factor into the decision.
Billy is held on charges of police assault and perverting the course of justice. Karen meets Sam’s family and the families of Tom and Rachel, giving them the true account even without a full courtroom outcome.
In her personal life, Karen says goodbye to Dr. Rafiq, who returns to Syria after the fall of the Assad regime. Prosecutor Ruth Wardlaw tells her a screenwriter plans a “based on a true story” drama that will put the truth before the public.
Karen accepts it and turns to the next cold case.
