The novel opens in the aftermath of Evie Vegheara’s ruined wedding. Zandyr killed her intended groom, Fabrian, at the altar to protect her, and Evie now isolates herself inside Phoenix Peak while the court whispers around her.
War arrives quickly. The Serpent Clan invades the northern borders to avenge Fabrian’s death, and Zandyr prepares to march. Before leaving, he confronts Evie in the royal Arena during a pre-battle blood ritual.
Zandyr asks Evie to remain in the Capital and protect the civilians while he defends the border. He binds them with a magical soul-tether and gives her a protection crown. Through their dreams, they stay mentally connected across the distance.
While Zandyr commands the army against the Serpent general Kleonos, Evie fights a different war in court. With her cousin Adara, her maid Leesa, the guard Owyn, and the cook Goose, she uncovers deep corruption.
The royal advisors Banu and Valuta Kovetmore have been controlling King Eldryan and Queen Zavoya through mind-control magic. They starve civilians, hoard supplies, and distribute pamphlets defaming Evie.
When Banu and Valuta burn down Owyn’s house, Evie rescues him and his daughter Anya. She pawns her own royal robes and jewels to buy food and medical supplies for the starving public.

To shield Kaya and her secret lover Vexa, Zandyr entered a mandatory blood oath faking a marriage alliance with Kaya. The oath silenced him from ever explaining this to Evie. Understanding his sacrifice, Evie binds her life force to his and pulls them both back from death.
Evie and Zandyr return to the Capital in secret. They stage a grand public funeral for Evie, carrying a golden sarcophagus into the square to trap Banu and Valuta. Zandyr opens a barrel revealing the corpse of Nylen, an assassin guard the advisors hired.
Evie emerges alive from the flames of her sarcophagus. Kaya steps forward, drinks a truth potion, and publicly exposes her parents’ abuse, corruption, and assassination plots.
Valuta triggers a self-destructive fire sphere spell. Zandyr leaps to save his father while Evie shields the crowd with her magic. Banu and Valuta die in their own flames, and their bodies are sealed inside Kaya’s torture chest and sunk to the ocean floor.
King Eldryan abdicates. Zandyr is crowned King and Evie is crowned Queen. They legally remarry in a genuine ceremony, and Evie’s indestructible copper crown is refashioned with a blue jewel and switchblade spike.
