Glen Runciter runs Runciter Associates, a prudence organization that blocks psychic intrusion. He discovers that several top telepaths employed by rival Raymond Hollis have vanished.

Runciter visits his deceased wife Ella in a Swiss moratorium, where she exists in half-life. Her communication is briefly hijacked by a parasitic half-lifer named Jory.

Joe Chip, a debt-ridden technician, evaluates Pat Conley, a new recruit who can alter past events. Despite his concerns, the firm hires her.

A representative for financier Stanton Mick hires Runciter’s team for a lunar mission. The job is a trap; the Stanton Mick on the Moon is a humanoid bomb that explodes and mortally wounds Runciter.

The surviving inertials rush Runciter’s body back to Earth for cold-pac. Soon after, objects begin regressing: modern televisions turn into old radios, and 1992 cars become 1930s Fords.

Team members start to mummify. Wendy Wright is found dead in a closet, and Al Hammond later withers away.

Runciter’s face appears on coins and stamps, and his voice comes through phones and televisions. The appearances seem to guide Joe Chip toward Des Moines.

Joe follows the clues and arrives in a 1939 version of Des Moines. There he learns that the survivors died in the lunar blast, not Runciter.

They are currently in half-life at a moratorium, and Jory Miller is consuming their life force. Jory constructs the regressing reality they experience.

Ella Runciter intervenes and gives Joe a spray can of Ubik. The substance restores his vitality and protects him from Jory’s predation.

Joe prepares to continue the struggle from within half-life. In the final scene, Runciter finds Joe’s face on his coins, suggesting Runciter’s reality may also be a regression.
