The narrative begins on Christmas Eve in affluent Notting Hill. Connie and Luke Baker maintain a seemingly flawless life.
Their eldest daughter, twenty-one-year-old Fran, returns home from York University with two revelations: she is pregnant, and she has a new boyfriend named Zac.
On Christmas Day, Connie questions Zac about his background. She is horrified to learn that Zac’s biological father is John Harding. John is the man with whom Connie had a life-shattering affair twenty-five years ago. Connie is plunged into panic, realizing her past is now deeply connected to her daughter’s future.
Connie confesses the truth to her husband, Luke, on December 28. Luke is consumed by rage and begins sleeping separately. The tension increases on December 29. Zac arranges a joint lunch for the two families.
The lunch is a disaster.
John Harding behaves arrogantly and privately tells Connie that Fran is “not a moral fit” for Zac. Meanwhile, Zac is hiding a terrifying secret of his own.
He witnessed a murder during a university placement and is being blackmailed into working as a drug runner for a gang leader named Bear.

On New Year’s Eve, the domestic and criminal worlds collide. Fran proposes to Connie that she might need an abortion, but the real crisis explodes when fifteen-year-old Sophie sneaks out and overdoses on a lethal batch of drugs delivered by Zac’s gang.
Ridden with guilt, Zac destroys a massive drug shipment. Bear’s gang abducts and beats him. They then kidnap Fran. A ransom of £35,000 is demanded.
Connie and John Harding deliver the money to a warehouse. Bear decides to execute them all. Just as he prepares to fire, John Harding attacks him. John takes fatal bullets to shield Connie, Fran, and Zac. As he dies, he tells Connie to lie to the couple. He whispers that he had a vasectomy so the baby cannot be his.
In the Epilogue, Sophie recovers. Fran gives birth to a healthy baby boy named John-Luca Neil Baker-Knight. Zac inherits John Harding’s estate, and he and Fran build a peaceful life together.
